14.04 hardware

Asked by Andrew Crisp

I am trying to install 14.04 64 bit on a laptop with an AMD processor, integrated Nvidia GeForce 8200M, 1TB SSHD and 3GB RAM.

After installation the system boots OK. Then when I try to access applications, the display starts to flash and jump around. If I go to additional drivers I can use the tested Nvidia driver which reports as being the correct driver to use. After reboot, I cannot access some applications such as Firefox.

Is there an iso image available which might be better than the 'standard' download for this configuration?

What happens if you try starting firefox?

Can you open a terminal window and issue the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo lshw -C display

and copy/paste all output into this question document?

If I try starting Firefox, the wait timer spins for a few seconds, then nothing, just my desktop.

Terminal command returns:

uname -a Linux andrew-HP-G60-Notebook-PC 3.16.0-31-generic #43~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Mar 10 20:13:38 UTC 2015 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I will try in Terminal as soon as I can get a stable screen for a few moments.

Issued command - got a lot of messages and Firefox started, but then screen went to background colour only, no icons at all and had to do a hard power off. I cannot get this running for long enough to copy and paste anything, and as the display is so unreliable I do not always have enough time to copy the output by hand before everything crashes again. I have seen a couple of messages about Ubuntu having serious internal errors asking if I want to send an error report, but as I cannot run this for long enough to establish a network connection, there seems to be little point in saying yes.

I have also tried to start Open Office applications, but although the splash screen displays and then disappears, the applications never start.

Do you have the chance to connect the laptop to an external monitor, that you can test whether the same flickering/flashing/... display problem occurs also there?

Connecting to an external monitor produces the same flashing & lock up problems.
