Installing Ubuntu onto an external hard drive

Asked by Eddie Mawson

Hi,

I have a Acer Chromebook c720

My question is, Can I install Ubuntu onto an external hard drive? I want to play Football Manager 2015 and need Ubuntu to do this, Ive installed Ubuntu onto my chromebook in its own partition but i dont then have enough space to install the game!! Ive bought a 250gig external hard drive in the hope that my question can become a reality...

Thanks

Eddie

If you find out how the application installs you may be able to use the device in the current install.

If it installs to a sunflower in $HOME then mount the device to the folder the game uses and then the files will go onto the USB.

If you make 2 partitions you can use some of the space in this way and some for casual user data.

I assume this question is subsequent to https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/259454

What actionparsnip wants to indicate is the following:

There is the possibility that you set up your external hard disk in a way that it extends the size of the built-in hard disk.
To be able to give advice we have to know the directory where Football Manager is installed. Maybe the files go into a subdirectory of your home directory, maybe they go into some /usr/local/... directory, etc. Depending on where you need the space added, you would have to configure the setup for using the external hard disk differently.

And the other possibility:
Yes, of course you can install Ubuntu on the external hard disk. The tricky thing in that case will be to set up the boot manager in a way that the computer would be able to boot also without the external hard disk plugged in (if you want that).

Installing Ubuntu on an additional hard disk is quite straightforward.

Plug in the external hard disk.
Boot from an Ubuntu installation kit (either on DVD or bootable USB stick) and install Ubuntu to the second hard disk (I assume it will be named /dev/sdb, you should be able to identify the right one based on current partitioning and total size). I guess you have to use the "something else" option when asked for "Installation type" http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Db8Wobn2kqM/UO9Vvc8Q50I/AAAAAAAAAkc/JWZeYGzb6tQ/s640/1349879961.png

In any case you should make sure that you have a recent backup for recovery of all your important files on the current hard disk, if something goes wrong.

1. The Ubuntu installation kit can be downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/ or any CD mirror server, e.g. http://mirror.pnl.gov/releases/

2. There is the recommendation to have an internet connection, but it is not essential.
If you have an internet connection, you can install the available updates during first installation. Without network connection you have to do the updates afterwards.

A chromebook with chrome OS seems to be a bit different from what I expected. Instead of hitting a function key during booting there seems to be a setting that you have to change inside chrome OS, see http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-information-for-chrome-os-devices/acer-c720-chromebook

Maybe also http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/764181-how-to-install-linux-on-an-acer-c720-chromebook helps.

Can you help with this problem?
