Ubuntu software center, Libre Office Writer and error messages when I boot up

Asked by Nigel Fitt

I am using Ubuntu 14.04LTS and the Chromium Browser.

Someone from Ubuntu sent an e-mail to me with instructions to fix the problem. I created a folder in Gmail and saved the e-mail here. Now, I cannot find the e-mail. The Ubuntu Janitor has closed the ticket.

I met someone, today who can help me to fix the problem. I need the e-mail.

I cannot open the Ubuntu Software center.

An error message appears as soon as I log in to my pc. It appears again when I open my browser.

I open Facebook, then Libre Office Writer, open a file, copy and paste it to Facebook, go back to Libre Office Writer to close it. It takes a long time to close

Dear Manfred Hampl,

The error message that pops up as I log in says
       System program problem detected.
Do you want to report the problem, now.
        Cancel Report problem

It appears again as soon as the desktop opens and then again. It also
appears when I open my Chromium browser as soon as my desktop opens.

Nothing happens when I click on the icon for the Ubuntu Software Center

My problem with Libre Office Writer has disappeared.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

God bless,
Nigel Fitt

For the problem with Software Center:
Please open a terminal and issue the commands

uname -a
lsb_release -crid
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and copy/paste all output into this question document.

I copied and pasted your text int to the Termianl at the prompt,
yesterday. Then I had to enter a password. The Terminal would not accept
my password.

I tried again, today. My copy- paste function does not work any more in
every program that I use. The Terminal opens with the text, below.
nigel@nigel-G41M-ES2L:a squiggle that I cannot find on my keyboard$

I typed your text above in to the Terminal. I could not put it on 4
lines. After entering the test I pressed enter. The text, below appeared.
uname: invalid option - - 'c'
Try 'uname - -help' for more information
nigel@nigel-G41M-ES2L a sqiggle$

Am I supposed to put a description of my problem into the Terminal window?

God bless,
Nigel Fitt

You have to open a terminal window, e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t
Then please mark the fist command with pressed mouse button that it is shown in reverse color.
Switch to the terminal window and press the middle mouse button.
This should paste the command into the terminal window.
Press "enter" to execute the command.
Please repeat with the other three commands.

When hitting Enter for the thirs command, you most probably will receive a request to enter your password as confirmation of an administrative task. Just enter your password, but notice, that you will not get any feedback on the screen (no echo, not even '*' placeholders). Just "blind" type your password and press Enter.

Finally use the terminal window's menu entries "Edit - Select all" and "Edit - Copy" to copy all output, switch to this Launchpad question document and paste everything into the Message: box and click on "I still need help" button.

Ubuntu 14.10 isn't an LTS release. It's support ends in July 2015.
