Then you already have Gnome 3.10 when you used Unity.

I had to install 14.04 again after after doing a 300 and something update which when finished left me with logining stoppage while using my correct password. No way in.
After installing from dvd......... in unity I updated 300 and something update and THEN afterwards installed gnome 3.10 from ubuntu softwear centre..no problem.
In using unity I can right click and get new doc on desktop and when using gnome that same doc is there...great ......so I really have no problem interchanging btween unity and gnome BUT I did it bfore with some command line instruction which I forget, to install new doc shortcut by right clicking gnome.

Like I said before, Ubu tu 14.04 COMES with Gnome 3.10 by default.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseNotes/UbuntuGNOME
States
"Most of GNOME 3.10 is now included. See the GNOME release notes for more details. The few missing bits of 3.10 are available in ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3.
gnome-weather, gnome-maps, gnome-photos and gnome-music are all available to install from the archives.
With GNOME 3.10 comes enhanced support for online accounts, and some general optimization of the user interface."

So your:
"installed gnome 3.10 from ubuntu softwear centre..no problem."

Is nonsense. When the installation finished from the CD you had Gmome 3.10 installed.

Do you mean that you installed Gnome Shell? Did you install Gnome Shell?

"Gnome" and "Gnome Shell" are very different creatures.

Hello actionparsnip
so there is no confusion...this is exactly what I did....
after installing from dvd I updated that moment , then afterwards
selecting in softwear centre "Full Gnome Desktop Environment with Extra
Components" That is what Idid. In reading your reply I checked in
softwear centre for the above and when I also scrolled down the list I
found Gnome Shell already ticked as installed. I did not install Gnome
shell from centre any time.
thanks

The default desktop in ubuntu has ALWAYS been gnome. Unity is a shell for gnome and is a plugin for compiz. Unity doesn't replace gnome.

If you install gnome shell then log off and log in to the gnome shell session, you will be using the default gnome shell from the gnome team, rather than the one canonical want you to use.

Can you help with original request using GNOME to create by
right clicking new document which I can do by using UBUNTU Default?

actionparsnip,
thank you for your help.
I have uninstalled GNOME shell and am using GNOME Compiz where I have the simplicity of 3.10 and can right click to create new doc.
Thank you for your enlightenment.
