How do I back up a Lubuntu system so that I can restore it if I have to

Asked by Roger Chapanis

After wiping Windows/XP from a Lenovo laptop, I installed Lubuntu on it. And, I've been using Lubuntu without incident since then. However, I have no backup plan so that I can restore the system if fails later on.

Is there any commercial software available for backing up a Lubuntu system to an external disk drive and then restoring that system from the back up if needed.

Please don't tell me that all I can do is enter a series of cryptic (to me) Unix commands from the command line. If that's my only option I might as well go back to Windows.

Of cause yo have the option to enter cryptic commands at the prompt, also you have the option to buy something. But for the start you should try "Deja Dup". In most Variants of UIbuntu, it is installed by default. if not you can find it in the Software Center.

Thomas,

Thanks for telling me about Deja Dup. I found it on my Lubuntu system;
however, it seems designed to back up only a few key files--to a folder on
the current system or to a floppy disk.

Deja Dup doesn't seem designed to back up the entire system (image) to an
external drive, which is what I want. Am I missing this capability in Deja
Dup, or is it missing in Deja Dup.

If Deja Dup cannot back up an entire drive, is there another program that
can?

Please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BackupYourSystem for a list of backup tools.

For taking a snapshot copy of the whole disk, clonezilla might be an option http://clonezilla.org/

Can you help with this problem?
