Rosewill RNX-N600UB USB Dual Band WiFi adapter won't connect In Ubuntu 12.04

I bought two of these to use with my new dual-band WiFi router. They are inexpensive and work well with Windows 7 64 bit & XP MCE 32 bit on both 2.4 G & 5 G.

I installed ndiswrapper-source, ndiswrapper-dkms & ndiswrapper-common using Ubuntu Software Center and tried all the drivers .inf files on the Rosewill CD. The only one that worked was the one for 64 bit XP. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit with all the updates through today (19 Sep 2014). With the 64 bit XP driver installed I show "rt2870 Hardware present: Yes" but when I try to configure my network no wireless networks are detected. I believe this adapter has the Realtec rt2870/rt2850 chipsets.

Does anybody know how to get drivers working for the rt2870?

Rosewill just informed me: "Please note that RNX-N600UB uses Ralink RT5572N chipset."

Not sure why the drivers CD has rt2870.sys drivers for Windows XP 32 & 64 bit?

So your wireless USB adapter requires the rt2800usb driver and Linux kernel 3.10 or newer.

But you are running kernel 3.2.0 which is way too old.

So please open a Terminal and run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linux-image-3.13.0-35-generic linux-headers-3.13.0-35-generic

sudo apt-get remove ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-dkms

Then reboot your PC and retest wireless using the Ralink RT5572 Wireless USB Adapter and using Linux kernel 3.13.0-35.

Mark,

Install appeared to complete correctly although when I rebooted my
screen resolution was much lower. It had changed from 1920X1280 to
1280X720. When I went into “Displays” 1280X720 & 800X600 were the only
two choices available.

I still wasn't able to see any wireless networks with the Rosewill
RNX-N600UB WiFi USB adapter.

Here is the output from running “sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a;
uname -a; lsusb” with the new 3.13.0-35 kernel installed.

Andrew,

No. I triple boot the system. Partition 1 (SDA1) is a ~102 GB Windows 7 NTFS primary partition, partition 2 is a ~51 GB XP MCE NTFS primary partition, next comes a ~40 GB logical partition with a 39.1 GB Ubuntu 12.04 logical drive (SDA5) and a 1.86 GB swap drive (SDA6). The remainder of the drive is a 1202.7 GB NTFS data partition. I have the Rosewill RNX-N600UB adapter installed and working under Windows 7 and XP on this computer. This reply was sent using it under Windows 7.

@Pete: I suggest testing your Rosewill RNX-N600UB USB Dual Band WiFi adapter during a LiveUSB or LiveCD session in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. If it still does not work out-of-the-box during that LiveUSB session, then I suggest selling it and getting one that works out-of-the-box in Ubuntu. These USB adapters are dirt cheap...

I appreciate the good advice. I actually have an Airlink AWLL6077 v2 that works with Ubuntu 12.04 and supports 2.4G. I bought the RNX-N600UB's to get 5G going as well.

I can't test the Rosewill RNX-N600UB USB Dual Band WiFi adapter during a LiveUSB or LiveCD session in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I even made a live USB drive last night to try again. See Launchpad questions 250781 & esp. 251007. Basically, none of my 5 Ubuntu computers will load 14.04. It appears to be a display issue with my NVIDIA video cards. Also, they will no longer load 12.04 if I leave the download (update) while installing boxes checked. That started happening about a year to year & one half ago?

I hate to be losing Ubuntu access because for years I only used Windows when I needed access to a Windows only application.

Mark & Andrew,

I replaced my NVIDIA video card with an ATI Radeon HD 5570. I was able to boot Ubuntu 14.04 from a DVD. The Rosewill RNX-N600UB USB Dual Band WiFi adapter worked natively on both 2.4G & 5G under 14.04. Looks like I'll be buying lots of new video cards. I currently run NVIDIA 7600GT, 7950GT, GT220, GT240 and have one mother with the NVIDIA 9400 chipset on board. I couldn't get 14.04 to display on any of them. Maybe they are just too old for Ubuntu to support? 12.04 did originally but stopped quite awhile ago.

@Pete: Have you tried booting 14.04 LTS with boot parameter nomodeset ?

During boot (bios or black screen and white text appears on UEFI)

Press e and add nomodeset before quite splash words.
Press F10 and it will continue to boot in non 3d mode
Install Ubuntu as usual
On first boot, use again nomodeset as described in first statement

Also in the BIOS, make sure that the onboard video is disabled in the BIOS, if you have a separate Nvidia video card installed on the same PC.

Also try booting 14.04 with the Nvidia card removed and the onboard video card enabled (if it exists) in the BIOS (crosstest).
