Thank you for your help! Ooops, sorry....I'm on 14.04...typo! I managed to find the drivers on the epson web site before posting this but I got totally confused by a plethora of different downloads so gave up, your link took me to where I've already been. I also tried uninstalling the printer and re installing to no avail, I think Ubuntu installs generic (is it SANE?) drivers and I'm not sure if that's the problem or not?

as far as I know you need to install several packages for the scanner:
1. From the core package & data package page the iscan-data_

3. From the network plugin page the iscan-network-
The terminal command sane-find-scanner should be able to identify the scanner. What is its output?

Hi, thank you for your help. I think my computer is 64 bit so does that mean I use driver _amd64deb?
I tried those installs but am not sure which ones I chose and I ended up with an error message which hung around for a week or so then disappeared!
I've pasted output below if it makes sense?

Something that may be relevant is that I (unfortunately have to) also use Windows 8 on this computer and have no issues, I installed their drivers from the supplied CD's, ignored their suggestion to use their web site for latest version at the suggestion of our ink supplier as they say they will force us to use their expensive ink!

What Windows does or doesn't do is of little reflection on Ubuntu. It is a completely different OS with completely different support.
If you use your Windows OS you can get the IP. The ping command is the same in Ubuntu as it is in Windows.

I just thought it might be relevant because this seems to be an issue I only have with ubuntu, don't know much about such things!
I think I need instructions on how to "ping the IP of the device" as I don't understand what this means or how to do it. Sorry for being so useless! Thanks again for your help so far...

Hi Manfred, thanks ever so much for taking the trouble.
Your first question:
phil@phil-
rc iscan 2.29.3-
ii iscan-data 1.29.0-2 all Image Scan! for Linux data files
phil@phil-
Is your second statement saying I should change it to that - I take it you mean minus the word "net"? Not sure how to do it if that's what you do mean - sorry!
Third question:

For reasons unknown I'm having no scanner or printing issues today!
If I install the drivers you suggest does that mean I have to un install the existing before I do?
Many thanks again for all your help!

1. The question with respect to IP address:
You wrote that you do not know how to ping the device, and so I tried extracting from your previous output the relevant information.
The ping command that you executed shows reasonable response from the device that I assume is the scanner. No further action is required with that.
2. The dpkg output shows that you only have the iscan-data package installed, but not the two other packages.
I recommend that you download the two other packages and install them. No un-installation is required before.

Either the printer/scanner was not switched on or not connected, or you have a general problem in your network.

1. There are newer versions of the driver packages. Please download and install
iscan-data_
iscan_2.
from http://
2. How is the scanner connected?
I understood that you have a network connection, so you have to find out the IP address (or hostname) of your scanner.
I assumed that it is 192.168.1.64, but that seems to be wrong.
Maybe putting the IP address into /etc/sane.

Hi Manfred,
I tried the first download from epson web site but it said:
"conflicts with the installed package 'iscan'...."
The second download appeared to download successfully.
I'm really sorry but I don't understand what the following means:
Maybe putting the IP address into /etc/sane.
into that file for instructions).

1. You should download both packages from the Epson web page and install them with one single command
sudo dpkg --install iscan-data_
2. What is the IP address of your scanner?
3. It might be necessary to edit the file /etc/sane.
Issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/sane.
and put the line
"net the-ip-
into it, (without quotes and with the real address of your scanner, something like net 192.168.2.15).
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Phil Batley for more information if necessary.
