When I try to update the system I get "failed to download repository information" check internet connection message
I had 12.10 version and had same problem. I think it started when connection was lost suddenly while trying to update GIMP. I upgraded to 14.04 and it was ok. But when I tried to install GIMP the trouble started again. Now whenever I try to update I get the following message
Failed to download repository information
Check your internet connection
Details
E:GPG error: http://
I am not an expert in linux and would require stepwise instructions if terminal is to be used to repair this problem

Did you upgrade to 13.04 then to 13.10 and then finally to 14.04 online or did you wipe 12.10 off and do a clean install of Trusty?
Thanks

Please provide the output of the terminal commands
cat -n /etc/apt/
sudo apt-get update
(detailed instructions:
open a terminal window, e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t
have this web page open
select the first command with your mouse that it is shown in reverse color
switch to the terminal window and press the middle mouse button, and press enter to execute the command
do the same with the second command
you will be asked for your password as confirmation, and please note that you will not see anything on screen when typing the password (no echo, not even '*' placeholders)
finally use the terminal window's menu line to select "edit - select all", and "edit - copy" to copy all output, and paste it as new response into this question document).

Did you "upgrade directly" using the web, or did you wipe 12.10 off and install 14.04 from CD?

I used usb bootable drive to boot from it and it asked the question whether
12.10 should be wiped out or upgraded. I chose upgraded and it worked and
is still working. i could get some updates also while installing as net was
connected. But when i tried to install GIMP, the trouble started and from
then no more updates

Some of the entries in your sources.list configuration file are wrong (especially all those related to http://
I recommend that you do the following:
Open a terminal and issue the command
sudo cp /etc/apt/
This should ask for your password as confirmation, but produce no further output.
Then issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/aot/
This will open an editor with the sources.list configuration file loaded.
I recommend that you delete all contents of that file, and insert the following contents (with copy/paste)
------- START OF TEXT TO COPY ---------
#######
################### OFFICIAL UBUNTU REPOS ###################
#######
###### Ubuntu Main Repos
deb http://
deb-src http://
###### Ubuntu Update Repos
deb http://
deb-src http://
deb http://
deb-src http://
###### Ubuntu Partner Repo
deb http://
deb-src http://
###### Ubuntu Extras Repo
deb http://
------- END OF TEXT TO COPY ---------
(don't include the "start" and "end" lines!).
Finally save the file and close the editor, and then re-issue the terminal commands
cat -n /etc/apt/
sudo apt-get update
and copy/paste all output into this question document as done before.

Dear Sir,
The text editor has no contents
So I copy and paste the list given by you
But when I try to save it the following error is shown
Could not find the file "/etc/aot/
please check that you typed the location correctly and try again

sudo gedit /etc/apt/
There is a typo.
I suggest you reinstall. You have upgraded in a non-supported way which is why I asked the method in the first place. You cannot leapfrog releases unless you jump from LTS to LTS.

You have already made steps in the right direction. The problem is that there line breaks in the sources.list file where they should not be.
Please try again:
open a terminal and issue the command
sudo gedit /etc/apt/
and replace all contents by the following lines.
It is important that you do not copy these lines from your e-mail system, but from the last message block in the web page
https:/
------- START OF TEXT TO COPY ---------

###### Ubuntu Extras Repo

------- END OF TEXT TO COPY ---------
(don't include the "start" and "end" lines!).
Save the file and close the editor, and then re-issue the terminal commands
cat -n /etc/apt/
sudo apt-get update
and copy/paste all output into this question document as done before.

Ok, the results look fine so far.
You should be able to use update-manager for updating your installation.
Just to verify whether the package management system really works well now, please provide the output of the following terminal commands:
dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
