Adept Installer gets crashed by "new desktop" offer

Asked by Thomas Christy

Scenario: I install Kubuntu, then attempt to download (typically it says there are 153) updates. At the end of this update download and install, it says "some updates could not be installed as they may crash other programs" - I OK to that, then there is a prompt that says "KDE now has a new desktop. Would you like to download and install it now?" - THAT IS THE PROBLEM. No matter what I do, something there crashes the Adept Installer for any further use. Here is the error message I get when I try to reopen Adept Installer:

"Another process is using the packaging system database (probably some other Adept application or apt-get or aptitude).
Would you like to attempt to resolve this problem? No will enter read-only mode and Cancel to quit and resolve this issue yourself."

So far, the only way I can get out of this predicament is to reinstall KUBUNTU from scratch... but there is still the risk that this "offer" (for a new KDE Desktop) may yet appear. IS THERE A WAY TO REPAIR whatever it is that is breaking Adept Installer? No matter how I answer the offer, either by agreeing to it, or simply quitting at that point, it breaks Adept Installer.

Please reply, as I am "dead in the water" without the ability to install further programs I wish to use. And reinstalling Kubuntu is no frolic to go thru time and again, either!

Have you tried installing new programs via apt-get or aptitude? This might at least enable you to use your system.

Also, have you checked that really no apt-get or aptitude processes are running in the background when you get the reported error message? You can do so by typing

ps -A | grep apt

in a console.

I could reproduce the problem on a virtual Kubuntu machine with adept returning the reported error, but my Adept did not crash afterwards. To solve the configuration issue, I was told to run

dpkg --configure -a

in a console; this worked for me. Have you also been told to do this and did you try it? Please also post any aptitude or apt-get errors, warnings etc. that were reported.

Thanks for your prompt reply, Andreas.

At this point I am less than one week exposed to Linux on PC, so your
help is appreciated, though still a bit mysterious.

I am not certain how to start up apt-get or aptitude to install
anything... but I will check out the "console" idea - that is, (I
presume) the same thing as a "terminal window" - ?

Perhaps you may be able to recommend a good tutorial website to help me
get more familiar with how linux works?

Thanks!

konsole can be found at KMenu -> System -> Konsole ( equivalent to a terminal in Ubuntu)

Type the following command in a Konsole and Try

sudo dpkg --configure -a

There are many books available on the market:

the best ones I feel are:

The official Ubuntu book by mako hill jono bacon and others

Ubuntu for Non Geeks by rickford grant

and

Beginning Ubuntu Linux second edition by keir thomas

Thanks for your interest in ubuntu

Have a try and keep us informed

Bhavani Shankar.

Thank-you, Bhavani. Your solution worked! I was able to straighten
things out successfully first try, as hoped. I appreciate the
references and will look them up. Next pursuit - not urgent at all - is
how to get Kubuntu to "see" and activate BOTH of my monitors. I
anticipate that to be something of a journey, but perhaps you know of a
utility someone has already provided to facilitate that? I know it
depends upon the monitor(s) and whether Linux may have a driver for the
video display card(s), etc... so I am prepared to keep at it awhile
until all is resolved. As a graphic artist, I have been using dual
monitors for years... excited to get started using GIMP, etc.

Again, thanks for your time and prompt reply(ies) - Bhavani (and
everyone else!)

Consider #25334 SOLVED & CLOSED

Best,

Thom

Hi Thomas,

glad we could help you. Concerning your monitor project, you should open a new question in the tracker to get quick support. Also consider having a look at the Ubuntu forums (www.ubuntuforums.org); also a good place to ask for help. Please set this question (#25334) to status solved then.

Enjoy your Kubuntu :)

Andreas
