The DVD player in laptop Acer aspire 5740 doesn't read in Ubuntu 14.04

Asked by Triyambakesh Mohanty

Non of the CDs & DVDs are readable in Acer Aspire 5740 installed with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. This was also an issue when 12.04 LTS was used. After inserting the CD/ DVD, the dialog window box of 'Blank CD-R Disk' 'CD/ DVD creator folder' opens with a message box- "unable to mount blank CD-R disk (location is already mounted)" is displayed separately. I am unable to play any CD/ DVD since LTS 12.04 was updated from Maverick Meerkat. Now its 14.04. Please resolve this problem.

Please add the output of

sudo lshw -class disk

You write that even for a CD with files on it you get a message 'blank CD'?

Now I have tried with some CDs and DVDs. The ROM makes noise... It starts and runs for sometimes and then stops. Keeps repeating for 5 mins and then fully silent. But on Screen I cannot see any dialogue opening after inserting CD/ DVD. The CD/ DVD has data within it. Earlier I posted it was showing Blank CD when I gave CDs containing files.

Your output shows two devices for CD/DVD. If you try the other one, do you see the same problem?

Another test: Can you please do the following:
Issue the terminal command "dmesg" and note down the time code of the last line that you see in the output.
Insert a CD (or DVD) into the drive, wait half a minute, and re-issue the command "dmesg".
Please copy/paste all lines that have been added since the first execution into this question document. (Use the time code that you have noted to identify the new lines.)

Dear Manfred,

Thanks for your insight. Well I would like to clarify one thing. The 2nd disk you are seeing in the output of running command sudo lshw -class disk is of Huawei Modem that I am using for accessing the Net. Please note that after running the command without CD & DVD gives the output (Status- Nodisk):-

triyambakesh@triyambakesh-laptop:~$ sudo lshw -class disk
[sudo] password for triyambakesh:
  *-disk
       description: ATA Disk
       product: WDC WD3200BEVT-2
       vendor: Western Digital
       physical id: 0.0.0
       bus info: scsi@0:0.0.0
       logical name: /dev/sda
       version: 01.0
       serial: WD-WX81A10P5165
       size: 298GiB (320GB)
       capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos
       configuration: ansiversion=5 sectorsize=512 signature=00001155
  *-cdrom
       description: DVD-RAM writer
       product: DVDRAM GT31N
       vendor: HL-DT-ST
       physical id: 0.0.0
       bus info: scsi@4:0.0.0
       logical name: /dev/cdrom
       logical name: /dev/sr0
       version: 1.00
       capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
       configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

And WITH CD & DVD GIVES OUTPUT (Status- Busy) for 1 minute:-

*-disk
       description: ATA Disk
       product: WDC WD3200BEVT-2
       vendor: Western Digital
       physical id: 0.0.0
       bus info: scsi@0:0.0.0
       logical name: /dev/sda
       version: 01.0
       serial: WD-WX81A10P5165
       size: 298GiB (320GB)
       capabilities: partitioned partitioned:dos
       configuration: ansiversion=5 sectorsize=512 signature=00001155
  *-cdrom

       logical name: /dev/sr0
       version: 1.00
       capabilities: removable audio cd-r cd-rw dvd dvd-r dvd-ram
       configuration: ansiversion=5 status=busy

After 1 min, with the CD & DVD inside, gives OUTPUT (Status- Nodisk):-

*-disk
       description: ATA Disk

       vendor: Western Digital
       physical id: 0.0.0

       configuration: ansiversion=5 status=nodisc

This could help you with more in analyzing the issue. And the CD & DVD doesn't runs or opens even after waiting for 5 to 10 mins. I guess this replies to your 1st part of the question asked by you. The 2nd part follows in the next stanza.

If the DVD drives goes from status=busy to status=nodisc this looks more like a hardware issue.
Either the drive has a problem with that specific disc medium, or there is a hardware (or firmware) problem with the drive as such. Have you checked whether there is dirt on the reading head of the drive (if that is accessible)?

I have to explain or correct one of my previous postings: The second CD-ROM device that I have seen in fact is your HUAWEI GSM modem that shows itself as if it is a CD-ROM to provide software to the system for installing (probably Windows only, maybe also Mac). Of course you cannot insert a CD into that device.

And your dmesg output does not show any additional lines when inserting a medium into the DVD drive. So it seems that there is a problem in the drive itself, that the drive cannot correctly identify the medium. See also my previous comment.

Well Thanks Manfred for your detailed analysis. I would like to add one thing, I updated my OS from 12.04 to 14. 04 after which the CD drive stopped working. Is there any specific reason?
Well I also have a problem with Brightness control for the same Laptop. Long back I had Posted this issue. With the PPA Kamal Mostafa Screen Brightness control, I was doing fine with my Laptop. But As I updated it from 12.04 to 14.04, Brightness control failed. I am again opening the question, could you have a look on this issue Please. Thanks
