http://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL - is this a bug in update mgr.?

Asked by R. S. Salac

Is this legitimate? It appeared in the UPdate Mgr. 7-16-2014 with an INSTALL box which when clicked says:
- - - - -
New Hardware support is available
Your current Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is going out of support
on 08/07/2014. After this date security updates for critical parts (kernel
and graphics stack) of your system will no longer be available.
For more information, please see:

I clicked on the: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL link

How do I execute: hwe-support-status --verbose to do this HWE update?
- - - - -
I tried to upgrade from 12.04 LTS to 12.10 and received release notes saying it was not supported:

= Upgrading to a no longer supported version =
You are about to upgrade to a version of Ubuntu that is no longer
supported.
The target release of Ubuntu is '''no longer supported''' by
Canonical. The support timeframe is between 18 month and 5 years after
the initial release. You will not receive security updates or critical
bugfixes. See http://www.ubuntu.com/releaseendoflife for details.
It is still possible to upgrade this version and eventually you will
be able to upgrade to a supported release of Ubuntu.
Alternatively you may want to consider to reinstall the machine to the
latest version, for more information on this, visit:
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu
For pre-installed system you may want to contact the manufacturer
for instructions. -

when I clicked on Upgrade, this appeared:
Failed to fetch
Fetching the upgrade failed. There may be a network problem.

At this point, I can
1 - get the step-by-step to do the hwe-support-status --verbose, will probably have to repeat at intervals but would be helpful as a bridge. Please help me with this.
2 - step-upgrade to 12.10, then 13, and so on which will be tedious but also a bridge. Please help me with this and advise as to wisdom of it.
3 - I'd prefer to purchase a 14.04 OS disc from Canonical for this elderly 32-bit Dell desktop with 2.0 GiB maxxed, Intel® Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66GHz. Graphics are unknown. Will the 14.04 be compatible or do I need something additional. I have some Seagate add'l. storage. Please advise, I do a lot of graphics and I LOVE UBUNTU, it is so much better than Microsoft & Apple. Thanks in advance.

12.10 is EOL so you won't find repos for it
You can upgrade directly to 14.04 as it is LTS to LTS release upgrade

if you open a terminal (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t) and type

hwe-support-status --verbose

What is the output?

Mr. Hampl, Thank you for telling me how to open a terminal & here is what appears:

Your current Hardware Enablement Stack
(HWE) is going out of support

on 08/07/2014. After this date
security updates for critical parts (kernel

and graphics stack) of your system will
no longer be available.

For more information, please see:

To upgrade to a supported (or longer
supported) configuration:

* Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS by running:

sudo do-release-upgrade

OR

* Install a newer HWE version by
running:

sudo apt-get install
linux-generic-lts-trusty libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty
xserver-xorg-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

It appears that this may be my answer; I will wait until I receive your reply andgo from there, probably doing the newer HWE version before I upgrade - I'm guessing that I open a terminal and copy the sudo etc. , then hit the return key?
Thanks for your help.

Thought I'd try to install a newer HWE version, so I opened a terminal and typed:

sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty libgl1-mesa-glx-lts-trusty xserver-xorg-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

and after my password was accepted, received:

Thank you for all help. I tried again and the
hwe-support-status --verbose
was successful. The hardware support is current and updated and I can
take my time with the 14.04 process.
