nm applet does not show any wireless options, no wlan0, or other shows up with ifconfig, Bios show wireless enable and led on, but when exit Bios led turns off and can't turn on wireless with toggle, only etho visible with any cmds

Asked by brandt

Wireless was working fine. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and it was still working fine. After logging on one day, all of my wireless seemed to disappear. I've searched and tried suggested fixes in forums (loading windows drivers via ndis, loaded backports, used synaptic package to try the b43 and firmware, tried switching on and off the wireless switch on the laptop, asked for help on "askubuntu", and much more. I've run all relative terminal cmds to try and find network controller, wlan0, but only etho shows up. I've checked my router and all is set properly (wife is able to connect wifi through her laptop). Strangely, in my Bios, the internal wireless is enabled and when I go into it, the wireless led lights up on the laptop. As soon as I leave the Bios, it turns off and I am unable to fn/toggle and switch the led on. I've used the rfkill list all, etc. and nothing is listed. lspci, lsusb and others list nothing wireless that I can see. I've tried stopping and starting network manager with success, but still nothing in the applet about wireless connections, or my network (or any others). Finally, I've reinstalled 13.10 and same thing. Then reinstalled 14.04 and tried all I could find through google and Ubuntu forums. Nothing has worked. I have now reinstalled 14.04 again and am at a complete loss. I would think, being a new install, it would load the appropriate drivers/chipset/whatever is needed to make it run correctly. Also, in "additional drivers", I only see two amd graphic accelerators and the X.Org Amd/Ati display wrapper (which it says is the correct driver/the one I'm using). However, those are the only 3 I have ever seen, even when wifi worked fine. In summary, I don't know what happened, why it quit, or where everything went.

Note: I'm not very technical, but I don't see anything in lsmod either.

Please read the last remark from Ultraman at the following location:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=924554

Ultraman solved it by blacklisting the acer_wmi module, which your computer has loaded into memory.

Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal and then press <ENTER>:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, please scroll down and ADD the following configuration line into the file:

blacklist acer_wmi

Using the gedit editor, SAVE the change to the

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then REBOOT and retest wireless. This blacklist operation should make the change permanent, even after rebooting.

This should force the Linux kernel to stop loading the acer_wmi module, which is probably causing the kernel to block your wireless card

acer_wmi is for ACER computers, not for Sony or Lenovo machines....

I did the blacklist acer_wmi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and saved. Read information within provided links. Did reboot. Unfortunately, still no wireless.

Then I suggest upgrading the BIOS using this link:

http://mobilesupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/ideapad-z-series-laptops/ideapad-z575

I have no further suggestions to make.

After upgrading the BIOS, reset the BIOS values to default values. Then make sure that wireless is enabled in the BIOS.

Ok. I downloaded file and extracted. It is an MS-DOS exe file, so I'm researching how to do this, as Wine doesn't work for it and I'm completely unfamiliar with "flashing the Bio" and what I've read so far. Is there a simple way to update it using the terminal? The file does not come with any "read me", or installation intructions.

You cannot run the BIOS upgrade program via wine or via Linux. You will need to boot Windows XP or Windows 7 on the same computer (via dual-boot) to be able to upgrade the BIOS.

The readme is here:

Well, I have major issues than. I had Windows 7 on this laptop and long ago, when I first tried to create a dual boot with Ubuntu, I blundered it. Windows went to a place I would never find again. The laptop didn't come with a recovery cd (has a recovery button on it, which stopped working) and I figured I wouldn't miss Windows anyway. So, after the fresh installs of Ubuntu I have done, I am pretty sure Windows is no longer in one piece, wherever it might be. I don't even know. I guess I need to see if I can burn an iso if I provide the Windows 7 product key? Other than that, I have no clue what to do now.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask brandt for more information if necessary.
