10.04 hangs after update

Asked by Pogo

After running Update Manager and restarting (a kernel update and ssl updates were included) my eeePC running NBR under 10.04 hangs after booting.

The machine starts and login proceeds, but there is no login sound, and no welcome sound after successful login. I have connection to the network, and the mouse and keyboard appear to work (in that it is possible to select items on the NBR panels), but nothing runs.

I can't start a terminal and wouldn't know what to do there anyway.

I can run my liveCD (which I am using now), so I reckon the hardware is fine.

Can I roll back the last update? If so, how?

Can I get some guidance to find what has failed and to fix that?

I have fairly recent backups, and so can reinstall if need be, but I am concerned that that will eventually lead to the same update, and repeat the problem.

Pogo.

Lucid is no longer supported in any way. I recommend you perform a clean install of Trusty. Trusty is LTS and supported til April 2019.

Yes, Andrew, so you keep saying.

Do you have answers that specifically address my questions?

The community does not support Lucid. It is EOL.

The words that (in)actionparsnip were unable to form were "Yes, it is possible to roll back an update".

He might then have helpfully mentioned holding down the left shift key at boot to get the grub menu, and selecting the previous kernel version there (it was a kernel update).

Having got the machine to boot, and demonstrated that the fault was with the latest kernel update, there are paths available to find and fix the problem.

This problem has arisen often enough to turn up in the Community (remember that word) Help (that one too) wiki here : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Upgrade.

It's not hard to be helpful. You don't have to be a version nazi, just make it easier for the user.

@actionparsnip: we've been over this before ( https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/zabbix/+question/246801 ). Please stop telling people that Lucid is unsupported. The list of Lucid server packages supported until 2015 is here: http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04.3/ubuntu-10.04.4-server-i386.list

@Pogo: others are also having issues with the recent kernel.

The guy is running the NBR (Netbook remix) s is a DESKTOP system, not a server. Lucid is only supprted on the server, the netbook remix is not a sever, it is a desktop and so is EOL.

So I am right and it is unsupported.

You made no mention of NBR in your dismissive reply, you were simply
shirking and are now clutching at straws.

The problem, as Daniel Letzeisen pointed out is with a package which is
supported until 2015, which you could have known by doing some
investigating first.

You have STILL not answered my question. Is it possible to roll back an
update? If so how? That is version independent.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I dont have to mention NBR. The poster stated that they are using NBR which is a desktop OS. The package is only supported on the server OS as the desktop went EOL in 9th May 2013 as that link on the official Ubuntu site states. The fact that the package is also on the server is mooted by the fact that the poster is using a desktop OS which is EOL for Lucid.

Its that simple.

@Pogo, if you're booted into the previous kernel, you can remove the updated one.

@actionparsnip, if the desktop variants of Lucid still receive updates from the server edition and those packages are causing issues, I don't see how those packages are unsupported, regardless of what CD the user originally installed. So it's not that simple (despite your wishful thinking).
