webXvid codec?

Asked by Rick Miller

Evening:

Is "webxvid codec" different than xvid codec? If so, is there a download available for Linux. I have the GS pkgs. installed and one of them states it has 'xvid" codec. I'm a bit perplexed!!
Thanx:
Rick

Hey Andrew:

Did some checking around and came up with these 2 sites---
http://askubuntu.com/questions/230766, then after reading it, went to--.
wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Standard_Base. From what i read, seems it would be
prudent to install the LSB modules mentioned in "questions/230766"? Does
this seem correct? I've still not figured out what webXvid is!!??
Take Care, my friend:

Hey Andrew:

I sent you the results of the readout you asked for (lsb_release -a; uname -a). Would you please respond. Also, I did install the LSB modules via (sudo apt-get install lsb-core). Was this the correct procedure?

Thank You:

Actionaparnsip just wanted to see what you computer responds to the command

lsb_release -a; uname -a

Can you please provide that information by putting it into a response in your question document https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/249619

Have you seen the discussion about webXvid in http://kickass.to/community/show/what-webxvid-codec/#post14855455

Morning Manfred:

   Here's the requested readout:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise
Linux rick-HP-2000-Notebook-PC 3.8.0-41-generic #60~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 16 00:18:00 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

   Keep in mind...this is after I installed LSB module...[(sudo apt-get install lsb-core)]

No, I had not seen/read "http://kickass.to/community/show/what-webxvid-codec/#post14855455", but intend to do so immediately after this posting. Oh, that leads to this: does Linux have a "crossover" program for decoding wmv? I'm seeing this format more frequently. I know what "wmv" is (more MSWin manipulation/control)!
Thank You:
Rick

Thanx Manfred! I read the suggested web posting. OK, as much as I agree
that it is (for the most part) a waste of time, the 'webXvid" I've download
did NOT tell you, upfront, that is what they are. Now, don't download
"webXvid" is a good idea, but how does one know that is what the format is
when it's not indicated in the torrent?

An additional remark: The codec information contained in video files is specified as a four letter code http://www.fourcc.org/codecs.php So there can only be XVID, but not webXvid as a valid codec information in a file.

What and from where was "the 'webXvid' I've download"?

Maybe you can install and use the mediainfo package to inspect a video for its included codec information.

Hey Manfred:

Thanx for replying. OK, again, I'll go read the link you suggested.
Ahm...'mediainfo" package; I'm not sure what your referring to.? Anyways,
have any suggestions/info on the .wmv files? I've looked (briefly) for a
program which would convert and/or open w/ Linux (.wmv being MSWin
specific). I'm not sure whether WINE would accomplish this? More and more
reading!!! OK, well, being that as it is, hopefully, eventually, I'll get
this "down". For now, as I've discovered, avoid webXvid and .rar files....
once I can tell that's what they are BEFORE downloading!! Take Care!
Thank You:

1. I wanted to recommend that you install the "mediainfo" and/or "mediainfo-gui" packages. These programs allow to inspect a media file to see the codecs in use for that file.

2. wmv is the extension for Windows media file, and some videos in that format can be played with the totem media player. In some cases totem makes a proposal for installing additional packages with codecs.

3. rar is the extension for a specific archive format (among others with the possibility to split a big file in smaller archive files). Such rar archives can contain legitimate contents, but of course they can also contain garbage. Just take care when downloading anything from the web.

Hey Manfred:

Thanks again. I'll mark the thread as "answered", however...I have a
problem with installing the "mediainfo". It won't allow the installation;
when I attempt the install from Ubuntu Software center, a window pops up
stating>>>[ Requires Installation of Untrusted Packages--The action would
require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources.] Then
I tik "OK" and it goes back to install and the process starts all over
again..I also tiked "repair" and got the same results. Now, I could try
from the command terminal, but first, I need to know if this would be the
correct command :: sudo apt-get install mediainfo ?? You've been a great
help. Thank you for all your input. Oh, BTW... did you get the "readout"
and if so, what did you make of it?
Take Care and Enjoy the Weekend:

addendum to previous post:

Sorry Manfred, I forgot to answer a question you posed. I really don't recall for sure, but I believe the "webXvid" was from ""A Million Ways To Die In The West" and I believe the torrent was from kickass.to... but don't hold me to that!! I had gotten a 'webXvid" before and when it wouldn't open(without a bunch of"do this" and "do that") I simply deleted it. As far as the .rar files...well, they tend to be "ad-ware". So, they immediately go to 'trash". Once I figure out how to get "mediainfo" installed, I'll no longer be plagued with "webXvid and .rar...or the next generation of ad-ware/spyware/trojans!!! Thanx for all the info/guidance.

For the issue with "Requires Installation of Untrusted Packages" - what is the output of the terminal command

sudo apt-get update

Currently this question is in status 'closed' - you might reopen it if you need further help.

And finally to the "results of the readout you asked for (lsb_release -a; uname -a)":
As one of the prerequisites for answering a question the supporters need to know the Ubuntu release of the person who needs help and whether it is the 32bit or 64bit version. This information is contained in the output of the two command. And as a remark: The text "no LSB modules are available" is part of the expected output on a standard Ubuntu system. It was not required to install the lsb_release package (and I do not think that anyone of the supporters has recommended to do so), but it will not do any harm anyhow.

Hey Manfred:

OK, did as directed and sorry to say the problem still exists. I ran the install from the terminal, allowed the 'untrusted" packages and the terminal went on and did it's thing. Now, when I went to "applications", mediainfo was no where to be found. Checked in U.S.C. and it indicated the program was yet to be installed? WOW!!! This is really turning out to be much more than it actually should be.

I see in the last section of updates many "commands" pertaining to Google Talk Plugin... I hope this is the "fix" I've been needing since I've had trouble with google Talk plugin for about a week. Also (and the hits just keep on coming), tried to install "alacarte" and got same warning about "untrusted" packages that I got from/with trying to install "mediainfo". I think it's time to ditch 12.04 and move on to either Pinguy or LinuxMint latest distro. Really, I've had nothing but trouble from 12.04 from the initial beginning of it's install.

Manfred, you've been a great help. Thanx for all you time and patience/tolerance!!
Take Care:
Rick

As requested some background, why I am asking for such information:

1. You have constantly received "GPG error / BADSIG" error messages for the apt-get command, and I try finding the reason and a remedy for that. (normally the "apt-key adv --recv-keys" command should help, but in your case it apparently doesn't).

2. You seem to have problems with the attempt to install mediainfo/mediainfo-gui.

3. Now I see a new warning/error in your output with respect to google talkplugin. Apparently you have changed your sources.list configuration file, and made a mistake with that, which should be easy to repair.

The information requested from you should provide some details of your system settings, helping to identify the root causes.

Please provide the output of:

ls -l /etc/apt
ls -l /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/*
grep takplugin /etc/apt/sources.list
grep takplugin /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

Good Day Manfred:

I trust your day is going well (with the exception of replying to
me...LOL).
In response to your last post;
Question/statement #1. I'm confused. I do not recall receiving any
GPG/BADSIG errror messages, unless that would be "command not found//no
such file exists ???
Statement #2. Yes
Statement #3. Yes (1st sentence). Again, I'm not aware I changed
anything!!(?). I just started receiving this error report about a week ago
and I cannot think of anything I did previous to that time in so far as
"changing" anything. Could there be another/any other cause for this
'crash".---I'd like to say this: I also have Firefox, and GoogleTalkPlugin
is working just fine, so why is it it 'crashed" w/in chromium? (It's not
important if you reply to that since that is what you'll find in the
readout.)
I'd like to thank you for explaining what your were/are looking for (in
reference to the readouts) and for all your help/effort. I feel as if I've
monopolized your time and I want you to know I've appreciated it all!!!
Here is the readout you requested: [ls -l /etc/apt

ad 1. I am referring to output like the following:
"W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net precise Release: The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 09589874801DF724 Launchpad Daily Build of master branch"
I assume that the root cause for that warning is also the reason for the "Requires Installation of Untrusted Packages" warning.

ad 2. I assume if we get the "BADSIG" problem solved, also the installation of mediainfo should work well.

ad 3. The change that I was talking about: I guess you tried enabling an additional source for the google talkplugin, and probably now have two entries for the same.

Sorry, I made a typo error in the command that I gave, please provide the output of

ls -la /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d
grep talkplugin /etc/apt/sources.list
grep talkplugin /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

Good morning Manfred:

Another day of great weather bestows us (here anyways). Getting very
warm these past 5 days and I'm lovin' it.

Well, with egg on my face, I must confess I know why there are 2 entries
for the same source. When 'googletalkplugin" crashed, I simply (stupidly)
tried to re-install it. However, I do question whether that is the root
cause of the problem, for googletalkplugin did NOT crash from Mozilla??
I'm not questioning your findings, I'm just wondering if 'duplication" is
the real root of the problem? OK, let's move on...here is the output of:
ls -la /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d
grep talkplugin /etc/apt/sources.list
grep talkplugin /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

ls -la /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 20 2012 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4096 Jun 17 10:48 ..
rick@rick-HP-2000-Notebook-PC:~$ grep talkplugin /etc/apt/sources.list
rick@rick-HP-2000-Notebook-PC:~$ grep talkplugin
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list:deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list:deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list:deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list:deb
http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main

The last 4 lines are duplicates of the same? Am I interpreting this
correctly....is it telling me "googletalkplug" is "stable"? Did you happen
to see my other post in which I stated doing a re-install of chromium? What
do you think/propose?
Manfred, Thank You:
*Rick*

We are talking about different things.

What I am dealing with is your problems with package management. Whenever you try installing a package or updating packages you see errors like "BADSIG" or "duplicate source". This is not related to any case where a package that you have installed is misbehaving.

Please provide the output of the commands

sudo dpkg --configure apt
cat -n /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list

Here is the readout you've requested. Thanx for explaining what it is
your seeking. I'd like to explain a few things to you, but I think it would
be best if I would/could use a direct e-mail rather than go through
launchpad? Your decision....(?)

To get rid of the "duplicates" warning message please do the following:

open a terminal and issue the command
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-talkplugin.list

This should ask for your password as a confirmation for an administrative action and should then open an editor with the configuration file for using google as a repository source loaded.

Delete the last three lines that the line"deb http://dl.google.com/linux/talkplugin/deb/ stable main" is there only once.
Save the file and close the editor.

Then try the commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install --reinstall apt
sudo apt-get update

and copy/paste all output into this question document as done before.

Good Day Manfred:

I'm sitting here looking at this readout and laughing....do you realize
how many lines of script I've posted for this one "problem"? Bet we got
all the Launchpad "police" looking over our shoulders here!! Wow, you've
been a great help and I've got to wonder, do you read ALL the printout, or
are you just looking for a specific 'report/line of info"? OK, my laptop
should be devoid of the gooletalkplugin problem now? Would this also take
care of the Adobe flash "crash"? I'll ask: Would deleting/re-installing
"chromium" and/or gmail have accomplished the same result?

I know, you've told me my laptop's problems are/were not based within
12.04. Could you please elaborate? You see, I've had difficulties w/ 12.04
since I first installed it, and am still continuing to experience, what I
think, are problems w/ 12.04. However, those problems will (should)
dissipate soon, once I move on to either Mint16 or the latest Pinguy
distro.
Manfred, *THANK YOU*...you've done more than I could expect. Hope you
had a great weekend!!

*Take care*:

addendum to previous post:

"googletalkplugin" still reports "crashed". This is the error message: Also, 2 more anomalies occurred while posting this #1. WiFi completely failed (had to restart) #2. After restart" in the middle of this post, launchpad "blanked out" and I had to re-open and re-write this post. This is why I feel there is a problem(s) greater than just googletalkplugin/Abode crashing. Perhaps I should start another post and list ALL the failures I've experienced since installing 12.04? Yes, yes, I know... just hurry up and DUMP 12.04!! and that SHOULD(?) solve all the difficulties!!!!(?)

I am quite sure that this might not be the speed of help that you would like, but I prefer one step after the other.

Your last output shows no "BADSIG" or "duplicates" or other warnings or error messages any more. So it seems that the problems with respect to the package management system have been solved. Now we can try tackling the other issues (and that should now go without hitting package management problems).

Try

sudo apt-get update
sudo install --reinstall google-talkplugin

to reinstall the google-talk-plugin, and report whether it still keeps crashing.

And for the sake of completeness: please list all the problems that you currently see in your installation.

Hey Manfred:

I've deleted chromium for the time being. For some odd reason,
googletalkplugin does not crash w/ Firefox????? Ahmm... didn't we
establish that re-installing "google talk plugin" is how I got the multiple
"program installs"? And as far as the weirdness that happened earlier
today, deleting chromium has "cured" those......for the time being anyway.
I'd rather not list all the problems, for it would be very lengthy in both
listing the problems and what I've done to try to correct them. I would,
however, send you a very detailed assessment through your e-mail. I think
we've taken up enough space here. Even if i choose to list them @LP, I
would have to make another post. Let's give chromium ( and you ) a few days
off, then see what happens after I re-install it. Post at you
say....Wed!! Later.
Thanx:
*Rick*

With respect to the idea of sending additional information via personal e-mail:
This does not fit to the intentions with launchpad to have all information on one spot. I cannot guarantee to continue working on your problems, and only if all information is available in the launchpad answer document, someone else can take over.

I agree with you that cluttering up this question document with more and different problems does not make sense.

1. Is there anything open with respect to webXvid? My answer was that there is Xvid encoding, and most postings about webXvid on the web are just hoax or spam. If you do not have any further question, please mark this question document as solved.

2. You created another question document related to my recommendation to install mediainfo and/or mediainfo-gui https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/250208 with certain problems in the package management system (BADSIG, duplicates warnings). If there are still some more questions open with that, please continue in that other question document and describe what problem you see with (installing) these packages, or mark also that question as solved.

3. There is a third open question about re-installing Google Talk Plugin https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/250217 - I do not see a real question there and have already added a warning that blind execution of the installation instruction multiple times with end up with warnings in the package management system. If you do not have further questions to that, please also mark that question as solved.

4. If you have further problems with your Ubuntu system, you might start over with a new question document in launchpad. Please try describing your problems in a way that it is clear for the supporters
- what you do
- what you expect to see
- what you see instead

Manfred/Anyone:

I would mark the post "solved" if indeed, they were. The problem with googletalkplugin stills exists, although, I feel that problem is within gmail/google itsself since it doesn't exsist w/ Firefox??? I agree "webxvid" is just a "scam"/adware and will no longer inquire about it's validity. If there was a way to expunge all the previous posts, I'd do so. I know you tried your best, but none of the "readouts" or what you've suggested has solved anything. Don't take it personally, I just think there is a "deeper" problem that exsists within the O.S. and we're just "treating the symptoms"! So, I've decided on LinuxMint17 and will wipe my HDD clean and install that O.S., as soon as I can find someplace to store some files. Since last posting here, a number of other "quirks" have cropped up, leading me to belive the O.S. is on it's way to completely crashing. If it does, NO LOSS there...except for my files. Thanx for all your help and input. In retrospect, I'm sorry to have wasted your time/efforts!

Take Care and THANK YOU:
RICK
