When you last unplugged the device, did you use the safe removal feature in your OS before physically unplugging it?

I can,t remember ever using safe mode when unplugging my cameral. I always just unplugged my camera and when i next plugged it in it was recognised in ubuntu 13.10

Why do you think that functionality is in the OS?

What file system does the camera storage use please?

The camera is a fujifilm finepics that windows 8 recognises and has no trouble importing the photographhs from. I reluctantly booted to windows to check just in case it was a camera failure. It takes SDHC cards and currently has a 4 GB sandisk card inserted

Most recent Fujifilm devices are MTP/PTP devices.

If you run a chkdsk on the storage in Windows then on the taskbar you will see an icon to safe remove the disk like this:

Use that icon and select to eject the camera. Now plug it into your Ubuntu system. Does it work?

Tried the above but it makes no difference. Tried plugging the camera into a friends computer running ubuntu 13,04 and the camera was recognised and automatically mounted if this is any help. The make and model number of my camera are FUJIFILM FinePicss JV500 and i think the filesystem is DCF

Thank you very much for your input. I think my camera is an older model so is probably something like DCF

I've solved my problem in a way, I've found a card reader slot at the front of my computer and this recognises the camera's memory card and automounts it. Sorry to cause trouble and thanks very much for your time and effort trying to help me. I,ve noticed that other people are having the same problem, maybe this simple solution could help them to access their photos.
