14.04 update 3.13.0-27 generic, restarts. 3.11.0.22 works

Asked by Richard M Brown

I just did an update from 13.04 to 13.10 to 14.04
at the end of the 14.04 update now ubuntu 3.13.0-27 preforms a software reset repeatedly. (software power on)
I am able to run the recoverey mode from 3.13.0-27
I am also able to run 3.11.0.22. generic. this comes up with an error Desktop manager not loaded.

I experienced the same problem, is your O.S. drive a solid state drive?

I discovered a workaround for this bug, I am curious as to which piece of hardware is causing it..., I'm not sure but believe this bug to be related to SSD's or APU processors, the link below is the workaround that I used.
You will find that if you play any video at startup it will circumvent this bug, I set a screensaver to run at startup.....

I f you play a video as soon as the desktop loads it will prevent the system from restarting, no matter how short the video.
Please let me know if that works.

It looks like the only thing our systems had in common is the graphics (Gallium 0.4 on amd Aruba) my system would at least sit on the desktop for ten seconds, you can try starting in advanced mode and repair broken pakages.

3.13.0-27 still resets.
durring boot the Ubuntu startup display shows with only left two dots turning red then stops , then the system reboots as software power on. this repeats repeatedly.
I am able to run the recoverey mode from 3.13.0-27

I have an ASUS 5640-5401A
I am using 2 displays
4gb ram
77 gb ata. Ubuntu is loaded on this drive

3.11.0.22. generic
boots properly except for an error Desktop manager not loaded.
both displays work properly otherwise

I am able to run the recoverey mode from 3.13.0-27
once the recovery menu comes up I select resume
Ubuntu then starts , almost properly. the only difference is the displays both come up with only single display mode on both monitors

with 3.13.0-22, both monitors are set properly.

I did not load other drivers, all are what came with Ubuntu 14.04

The resets still occur repeatedly with 3.13.0-27 14.04 build. 3.11.0.22 works, still with error, Desktop manager not loaded.

Meanwhile there should be newer kernel versions (up to 3.13.0-30). If you perform updates to install the -30 kernel, does booting into that kernel version work?

I tried to update from 3.11.0.22 because 3.13.0-27 is still not booting. was not able to update to 3.13.0-30.
Problem still exists.

I am at a loss. I have tried all the advanced options in the recovery mode, all with no effictive remidy
I am not able to determine which package is failing.
on a couple of startups the system came up to the signon screen then did power on reset.

If your system does not boot (or immediately reboots) with the 3.13 kernels, but works well with 3.11 kernels, then the culprit seems to be the kernel package ("linux"). There is the theoretical possibility that the root cause of your problem is your hardware, and that this problem becomes only visible with the 3.13 kernel. So I suggest that you run memtest from the grub menu to check for faulty memory. As far as I can see you have already created a bug report. I hope someone of the developers is able to take that up.

The latest update solved my problem, in doing so I had to preform a system restore for windows Vista
I ran the memtest with no errors
