It seem to be going good after "sudo apt-get update" But at the end it said "Release Unable to find expected entry "deb-src/
E: Some index files failed to download They have been ignored, or old ones used instead"
I proceeded anyway and typed "sudo apt-get install bitcoin" I got
"Reading package lists.. Done
Building dependency try
Reading state information.. Done
E: Unable to locate package bitcoin"

Something is wrong with your package source list or a file on the repository servers. Can you post the full output of
sudo apt-get update

1. You mistyped the command with "respository" instead of "repository". Please try again. You better use copy/paste or command line expansion with tab key instead of trying to type the whole command from scratch.
2. There seems already to be an error in the sources.list entry for bitcoin, please provide the output of the terminal command
grep bitcoin /etc/apt/

Much obliged. I tried it again, but it made no difference. I then tried
grep bitcoin /etc/apt/
I put the command into a terminal at 6:00 AM and it is still processing
without anything appearing on the screen.

That command should not take hours, stop it with ctrl-c and try again by splitting into two:
grep bitcoin /etc/apt/
grep bitcoin /etc/apt/
and finally copy/paste all output.

Ok, I think I see what has to be done.
Open a terminal and issue the command
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/
This should ask for your password as confirmation for an administrative task and then open an editor with your sources.list configuration file loaded. Scroll down and search for two lines that contain the string "bitcoin". Delete thsese two lines. Save the file and close the editor.
Issue the commands
sudo rm /etc/apt/
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bitcoin
and finally copy/paste all output as done before.

I got some help from my room mate. We could not find two lines containing
"bitcoin". There was only one and it was commented upon. I tried installing
the bitcoin anyway, but it could not be found. This is what we got:

I see two "bitcoin" lines at the very end (one commented out, one active).
Please continue with the other commands as given in my previous posting, and copy/paste the output of these commands.

I see what you mean about there being two references to bitcoin. My room
mate thought it was one line. In any case, for some reason, I can't get
that lis again.

Again you mistyped a command!
Please use copy and paste from this document to your terminal window to avoid another typo error.
Mark the first line with your mouse such that it is shown in reverse color, switch to the terminal window and click the middle mouse button, and finally press enter, then mark the second line and so on:
sudo rm /etc/apt/
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:bitcoin/bitcoin
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bitcoin
and again copy/paste all output.

Try
sudo apt-get install bitcoin-qt
and/or
sudo apt-get install bitcoind
depending on which package you need.

The output of your last message shows that bitcoin-qt has now been installed.
Now try the program, and if everything is working well please mark this question as solved.
In case something is wrong please do not hesitate to ask, providing as much details as possible.
One remark: there are 11 updates waiting in your system, you might run update-manager to install the updates if you have not yet done so.
