Ever since I upgraded to ubuntu 14.04, the trackpad (touchpad) doesnot work. I was working perfectly in 12.04. Moreover, there is no trackpad option under mouse and touchpad (settings). I would be grateful for any help provided.

Asked by varun

Trackpad has not been Working. It was working fine on 12.04. I tried a lot, including some terminal commands, and ubuntu tweak tools. The trackpad option doesnot appear in the setting tab for mouse and trackpads.

Does the system have a make and model?
Does 12.04 work ok for you? No issues?

Firstly, I thank you for your immediate and instantaneous response.

My laptop is a HP pavilion N204 tx. It was running Ubuntu 12.04, when I bought it a few days ago. I updated to Ubuntu 14.04 via the update manager.

The touch pad was working perfectly in 12.04, where as it doesnot work in 14.04. An external ‎mouse, however, does work normally.

There was a page on Ubuntu wiki to troubleshoot touch pad problems. Under the section 'touch pad not working at all'» 'external mouse works', there were a few lines of code (to be typed in terminal) given. Even then my problem was not rectified.

I have attached the page url below. I have also attached screen shots of that web  page .

Also I did try 'sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps' which too did not solve this issue. I would be thankful if you would help me resolve this issue.

Thanks,
Varun.

Yes but did the rest of the system work under 12.04 as well?

Yes, rest of the system worked fine in 12.04. Could this possibly be a system bug?

Thanks,
Varun.

I saw a video on YouTube to solve the touch pad recognition issue on Ubuntu 11.04. The laptop used was a Sony vaio (i couldn't make out the model), and the issue was pretty much resolved in the video. Could this possibly work on Ubuntu 14.04?

I have attached the link to the video below.

If the system was working well in 12.04, why upgrade? Why fix something that wasn't broken and has 3 years support left?

But you didn't need the new version per-se. The version you had was doing all you needed.......The OS was functioning as desired and is supported for a long time to come, then you fixed what wasn't broken. Doesn't this sound ridiculous to you?

It's like having a car that is working perfectly and is full of water, petrol and fuel with great tyres and a great running engine, then you start messing with it?

As with the touchpad, i suggest you report a bug for the touchpad not working in the new kernel.

So it this a os problem? I agree that I may have updated too early, a mistake, but will this be fixed by the first point release (ie July)?

I know that one wouldn't want to change such a lovely car, unless it had a newer, better looking version.

How do I go about posting a bug report. I would be grateful if you were to guide about that.

Yes, I do agree that maybe I shouldn't have updated, but to reass‎ure could you please tell me as to whether this is an os issue or not? Will it be fixed in the first point release of Ubuntu 14.04?

What was done cannot be reversed, so anyways, is there a temporary fix for this issue.

Once gin I thank you a lot for your time and patience. Just for the record, I updated believing that a new ever version would be far better and easier to use (lesser bugs) than an older, I presumed that this was how it would be.

Thanks,
Varun.

I have a similar issue with a Toshiba satellite S55t. I am able to use a USB mouse fine but the trackpad does not work.
