Where to install the optional plugins files of Opencpn with Ubuntu 12.4 LTS ?

Asked by Yves Marie PAGE

I use with different computers (32 & 64 bits) the navigation software Opencpn under Ubuntu 12.4 LTS. I tried to install optional plugins but after downloading them, I don't know where to put the files to have them present in the plugins board of the software. In the different blogs that I have consulted about this question, I found answers only for Windows OS. Thank you for helping a stupid beginner with Linux.

Before I post this I have no prior experience with this product or have any idea what it even does. I just searched the web.

http://opencpn.org/ocpn/climatology_plugin

Shows that each plugin seems to reside in its own folder in
/usr/share/opencpn/plugins

Eg:
/usr/share/opencpn/plugins/climatology

Thank you Andrew for this answer. I could create the folder "plugins" in :

 *  /usr/share/opencpn/plugins
and then the folder "climatology" as per your example :

 * /usr/share/opencpn/plugins/climatology

But, I cannot download the plugins directly in the folder "climatology" nor I can copy it in this directory because I have not the permission. I tried to modify the permission (reading and writing) but it does not change anything.

Do you have any suggestion ?
Thank you again for your patience.
Best regards

sudo nautilus /usr/share/opencpn

You can now copy folders to it.

Funny how I could find all this out...despite never having used the application or even know what it is......weird huh

Excellent, I could copy the plugin "climatology" in /usr/share/opencpn/plugins/climatology

then I can read on the terminal :

 * ** (nautilus:6396): WARNING **: Could not inhibit power management: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NameHasNoOwner: Name "org.gnome.SessionManager" does not existand I can't open the file to install the module (no software able to open it).

Any suggestion ?

Actually, in my computer, the plugins for opencpn are not located in
/usr/share/opencpn
but in the following folder :
/usr/lib/opencpn
I simply copy the download of the new plugins in this last folder ans it works :

sudo nautilus /usr/lib/opencpn

Thank you to Andrew for his help
