Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If you burned a CD did you burn as slowly as possible?
Did you not extract the ISO and burn it as an image?

Thanks

AP,

Thanks for following up with me. No, I did not MD5 test the ISO, nor am I
sure I burnt the DVD as slowly as possible. I did extract the ISO and burn
that to a DVD. I tried Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04, and both got hung up on the
kernel. It went to a black screen with lines of log dialogue from my best
guess to its description. I tried it both ways with leaving off the
updates while installing and the third party software. 14.04 seemed to be
very sluggish on my machine as well- an old Athlon 64 with 1.4 gigs of ram
and an 80 gig HD. I was able to install 12.04.3 with relatively little
problems until I went in and did the updates. When I did the important
security updates here, everything seemed fine until I tried the recommended
updates. This is where 12.04 again got hung up at the kernel and locked up.
At one point during this process, it started running a machine window? and
then when it too came to the kernel reconfiguration it also went to a black
screen. I'm trying to get Xubuntu to download on another machine to see if
I can get that to work better.

You need to MD5 test the ISO so you know the file is complete and consistant.
You don't extract the file. You open the file with your CD burner and it will burn just right. WinRAR and many archive managers can handle ISO files so Windows users frequently just see the icon rather than thinking and using the file correctly.

Your system is more than enough to use Ubuntu with. You can even use Xubuntu or Lubuntu to free up more resources for applications.

Great. I'll look up how to run that test and take it from there.
