I can not get lubuntu to load. I download file and it tells men "application not found"

Asked by Cheryl

I have attempted to install lubuntu on my Dell Compaq which is currently running windows xp. Each time I download the file and try to load it it tells me the "Application is not found". I did read the instructions but unfortunately I am not very computer savvy. I believe the end result should be the complete removal of windows and the installation of lubunto as my os. I have saved any data that I knew how to save. I believe the drivers will have to be re-downloaded after the new os is installed. I have no clue what I am doing. Any help anyone can give me would be so very appreciated.

What file have you downloaded?

You should download an ISO file from http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/ and then:
1. Burn it to a DVD with a burning software (like ImgBurn)
2. Write content to a USB drive using Rufus: http://rufus.akeo.ie/ or Unetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

Be sure to MD5 test the ISO you download.

You do not need to extract the file, just burn it as an image as slowly as possible.

For booting from the CD/DVD, you have to instruct the computer's BIOS to boot from the optical drive.
For doing so you have to press certain Fn-Keys early during the boot process.
If you tell us what make and model your computer is (is it Dell or is it HP Compaq?), we should be able to indicate which key to press.

If it is a compaq computer, pressing F10 during the boot process (around the moment that the compaq logo os shown) should lead to the BIOS setup dialogue. On these screens you should be able to change the boot sequence to boot from the optical disk, before searching for the operating system on the hard disk.

F10 doesn't work but delete brings up a blue screen with a bunch of options to make changes to my computer. Do I use one of the options in there?

Yes, that seems to be what you need.
There should be an option on one of the screens, with a name like "boot sequence", "boot priority", "device priority" or similar.
To be able to boot from the Ubuntu installation DVD you have to change the sequence of the boot devices in a way that the optical disk, (DVD) comes before the hard disk. (Note, that it might be that the devices are listed by their model name - in that case you have to identify the models of your hard disk(s) and DVD drive(s) first to be able to correctly interpret the output and to set the boot priority.)

Can you help with this problem?
