every time i switch computer off ububto wont reboot i have to reinstall

I am a newby and have just installed ubuntu on my computer and it worked ok until i switched my computer off when i switched computer back on ubuntu won't start it goes as far as the background screen and stops and the only way i can get ubuntu back is to reinstall

How are you switching the system off?
Is the OS fully updated?

After having reloaded the software 3 times it finally seems to be working I have now shut down and restarted 4 times and is still booting ok
