Stubborn Gimp and compiz malfunctions since upgrade to 12.04 LTS

Asked by Frederic

Hi all,
Since I upgraded to 12.04 LTS a year ago or so, I occasionally experience two annoying problems and have spent god knows how may hours reading forums and FAQs to absolutely no avail. Gimp: When I "save as", Gimp saves but exits and all unsaved work is lost. Compiz: "compiz is no longer supported ..." it says now and then. All my windows lose their frames and become unmovable. All apt-get upgrades and updates don't haven't made the slightest difference. I cant' believe the malfunctions have gone unnoticed for all this time and would expect a keyword search to get right to the point. No such luck!
The machine is a Dell Latitude E6500.
Hints desperately welcome.
Happy new year!

Have you tried Unity2D session selectable from the login screen?

Thanks for the hint. Stupid question: what is the login screen? When I
fire up, I never come across a login screen. When I hit F12 I see
everything but nothing appears to relate to logging in. I have Unity2D
installed, but it doesn't seem to activate.

Its the screen you log first get when you power on, where you type your password. If you use autologin then you will need to log out of your session then you can choose Unity2D there.

Thank you for your advice. When I start the machine and the login prompt
appears, I can hit the Ubuntu logo and am presented four choices:

     GNOME Classic
     GNOME Classic (No effects)
     Ubuntu
     Ubuntu 2D

The last choice shares "2D" with Unity2D. So I tried that. The Windows
still look the same. Gimp still malfunctions. grepping processes:

fr@hatchbox-one:~$ ps -A | grep -i compiz
  2390 ? 00:08:12 compiz

fr@hatchbox-one:~$ ps -A | grep -i unity
  2533 ? 00:00:05 unity-panel-ser
  2880 ? 00:00:01 unity-applicati
  2884 ? 00:00:00 unity-files-dae
  2885 ? 00:00:00 unity-music-dae
  2886 ? 00:00:00 unity-lens-vide
  2941 ? 00:00:00 unity-scope-vid
  2943 ? 00:00:00 unity-musicstor

I don't know what to try next. I'd be very grateful for further advice.

I'd like to close the issue, but, acting on the advice of Jan 4, I got stuck with a result I couldn't interpret and requesting clarification I received no further response. No matter. I'd like to thank the volunteers who spend time answering possibly long lists of new posts. They may just not have time left to follow up.
I was hoping one or the other user would comment. If I remain without response for another week, I shall hit the "closed" button. thread.

So I did and received two pieces of advice from actionparsnip, which
remained inconclusive, because they referred to elements I couldn't
identify on my system. I kept reporting back what I saw, but
actionparsnip ceased to respond after my second feedback.

I suppose actionparsnip is a systems administrator or a developer, one
of the dedicated advisers who deserve credit for volunteering their
time. They may get overwhelmed by the number of posts addressing them. I
was actually hoping to hear from users who have the same problem. It is
hardly possible that a systematic and annoying malfunction on widely
used facilities would occur on mine and on no other. No user responded.

I thank actionparsnip for their efforts.
