installation issue

Asked by tgarrett

I attempted install ubuntu 7.10 on a cleaned 20GB HDD, 512 MB RAM of Dell GX270. The Live CD runs forever ... non stop but it never pass the first optional menu screen. Noise produced from HDD or CD drive during the process of installation but it had not progress. Why?

If I reload XP on the system processes installation without troubles, what was wrong with the Ubuntu live CD that i downloaded from Purdue mirror site?

I have read somewhere that after "downlaoding" the Ubuntu, the software needs to be burned on CD /DVD as IMAGE. I don't think nero will allow you to chooses the options while creating a cd. For Windows, donload "infrarecorder" at http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=infrarecorder&filename=ir0441_unicode.exe&use_mirror=superb-west.

Once this is installed, go to the actions in the menu bar and select "record image" option & contiue with the correct location of your "ubuntu" download ( ~697MB). Use this cd for installing the software.

Hope this helps - good luck

Ram, if he has the "options screen", it means it was burned correctly as an image :) The easiest "test" to ask if it was burned correctly is if they have one file on the disc (i.e. the iso) or a lot of files on the cd (burned correctly). Most programs do burn images, but sometimes the option to do so is hidden in a menu, and lots of users end up burning the iso to a cd not as an image.

As for the problem at hand, when you said "deleted the splash screen", did you also erase quiet? Do you get any sort of output before it went dark? If you haven't tried this already, give this a shot and hopefully it will reveal some sort of information:

Edit the boot line, remove "quiet splash --" and add the noacpi noapic nousb vga=XXX
where XXX are three numbers from the table here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VESA_BIOS_Extensions#Linux_video_mode_numbers

Hope this helps!

Please make some common check using first boot menu Ubuntu live cd options...
This: http://i18.tinypic.com/6tzzndc.jpg
Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check cd for defects"

When your pc seem freezed or locked or the install seems stalled:
- try to press CTR + ALT + F1 ... F2... to F7 to see some errors or warning

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
Remove the "quiet" and "splash" parameter to see startup infos, warnings and/or errors messages.
Then you can try some paramaters by put them one by one or together are:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x)
here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Hope this helps
