When my Ubuntu computer is rebooted, the monitor shows a raster pattern -- requiring additional reboots

Asked by Saul Lubkin

Often when rebooting my computer (such as when a new linux kernel is introduced by Update Manager), on restarting,
the monitor shows a raster pattern -- forcing another reboot.

The raster pattern sometimes comes up when Firefox starts another tab.

It also happens sometimes (including today), when Thunderbird is restarted.

It seems that Ubuntu has difficulty with my monitor The monitor is in a very high resolution mode -- I don't want to check this now, as it might cause the raster pattern to come up again before I can send this message.

Help greatly appreciated,

Why did you not add that the system is an Acer Aspire T180 running Raring?

Why was all this information not on the initial question? Or were you not aware of the Ubuntu version, make and model of the system and the video chip?

My apologies. I was aware of part of that information, but not all of it.
My level of expertise is limited, unfortunately.
Please let me know of any and all additional information that I should
supply. I much appreciate your working on the problem.

sudo apt-get install nvida-current

Reboot to test

Thank you for responding, actionparsnip.

I executed

sudo apt-get install nvida-current

The response was: "unable to locate package nvida-current". (Same when I
tried sudo apt-get install nvida, or
sudo apt-get install nvida_current.) My guess: The package has a different
name.
