problem with Synaptic, ¨dpkg interrupted¨

Asked by geoffpmoss

I´m a complete newcomer to Linux; I´m running Ubuntu, and trying to open the Synaptic menu, but I keep getting the message

¨ E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. ¨

What on earth does this mean?, and how do I correct the problem?
