sound not working

Asked by Guillaume Cote

I would like help with my sound card, it never worked.

From the forum, I did
% sudo lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 15:24
00:05.0 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP61 High Definition Audio (rev a2)
Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Device 7309
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 5
 Memory at dff78000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [44] Power Management version 2
 Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable+ 64bit+
Capabilities: [6c] HyperTransport: MSI Mapping Enable- Fixed+

They said to check at http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Vendor-Nvidia to see if it is supported I am looking, but I cannot find if it matchs. Can somebody with a better understading of sound card tell me if it is supported?

If not, what info should I get?

Thanks

Step 4:

Copy & paste the following diagnostic command into the Linux Terminal, then press <Enter>. The command starts with the command cat and ends with the word sound. (Do not copy & paste this diagnostic command from an email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy part of the command.) When asked for your password, type your normal user password (no stars are given as you type); then press <Enter> again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3-button mouse, you do not need to type the commands into the Terminal. Instead, copy the commands from this web page and paste them into the terminal. To do this, move your mouse cursor over the start of the command written on the Web page. Then press the left mouse button and drag the mouse till the end of the command to highlight the whole command; then release the mouse button. Then press the middle mouse button or mouse wheel anywhere inside the Terminal. The command should now be printed in the Terminal without errors. Now press <Enter> to execute the command.

Why are you chopping up the single command into lots of commands?

It is ONE command....

One last time:

We need the terminal output of this command:

cat /proc/asound/{version,cards,devices,hwdep,pcm,seq/clients}; sudo rm /etc/asound.conf; sudo rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* ;sudo rm ~/.pulse-cookie; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install aptitude; sudo aptitude install paman gnome-alsamixer libasound2-plugins padevchooser libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio; sudo lshw -short;ls -lart /dev/snd; cat /dev/sndstat; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo which alsactl; sudo fuser -v /dev/dsp /dev/snd/* ; dpkg -S bin/slmodemd; dmesg | egrep 'EMU|probe|emu|ALSA|alsa|ac97|udi|snd|ound|irmware'; sudo /etc/init.d/sl-modem-daemon status; sudo grep model /etc/modprobe.d/* ; sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; lsmod | egrep 'snd|usb|midi|udio'; aplay -l; sudo alsa force-reload; sudo lshw -C sound

I posted the output of each of the diagnostic command in step 4. I chopped them because some of them outputs in English and other outputs in French, so I added English translation for the ones that outputs in French.

For some strange reason, the snd_hda_intel driver is not being loaded for your sound device.

This is why it says "UNCLAIMED" and it also explains why the ALSA driver version is empty in your Terminal output.

I wonder if audio is disabled in the BIOS of your PC.

I also wonder if the audio card is embedded in the motherboard. If it is not embedded and if it is a PCI card, then I suggest moving the PCI sound card to a different slot on your PC's motherboard.

Does sound output work fine while using Ubuntu 13.04 during a LiveCD or LiveUSB session?

If sound output works in Ubuntu 13.04, then I suggest installing Ubuntu 13.04.

Thanks for confirming that there is a driver for my card.

I check the BIOS, the audio is not disabled in the BIOS.

Why do you recommend reinstalling Linux instead of investigating why the driver is not loaded?

OK, could you please send us the full output of these Terminal commands?

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms

sudo modprobe snd_hda_intel

sudo alsa force-reload

sudo lshw -C sound

Then retest sound output using headphones and speakers. Please test all audio jacks at the front and the back of your PC.

Sound works with 2.6.32-45-generic. I would like to test with 3.2.0-48 (the latest kernel installed with autoupdate, but it is not in the grub menu). I asked a question about that on askubuntu.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/311616/why-ubuntu-does-not-use-the-kernels-installed-by-automatic-update

I'll update the post when I manage to boot with this kernel.

I also asked the kernel question on launchpad
