It would probably be best to keep the discussion to one thread rather than opening a new question on the same topic. I just happed to see this but if someone else wanted to help they might not realize that this is in response to a different question. Since we are here now, lets keep the discussion here. For anyone else, this started in question 22995.

If you are running Ubuntu then you are running Linux. Ubuntu is a flavor of Linux. There are many flavors but most have a lot in common. Add/remove is easy. Open it and search for wine. Change the show box to say "all available applications" first. When you see the "wine windows emulator" just check the check box and click apply changes. That should be it. When it finishes you have wine installed. However, this doesn't mean that you will be able to install and run Mahjongg. That program may or may not be compatible with wine.

Before going through all this, may I make a suggestion? You are clearly new to Ubuntu and Linux. That is fine and we welcome you. However, before trying to run your windows programs in Ubuntu, give the native Ubuntu apps a try. They may not be as fancy but using the native programs will help you learn more about the new operating system you are tying out. If after a few weeks the included Mahjongg game isn't doing it for you we can help you see if your windows version will work. The included Mahjongg game is in the applications menu under games. There are also some other ones available to install in the same way that I described installing wine above. There is KMahjongg and Shisen-Sho. Give these a try too if you want. There may be more as well that I am not familiar with.

If you want to try out your Mahjongg in wine post back and I'll see if I can determine if it will work. Please give as many details about the game as possible - i.e. full name, publisher, etc. There could be numerous similar games out there.

When you do post back, please be sure to reply here rather than opening another question. There should be a box below to type a new reply in.

I'm afraid I don't have an easy answer. Your game may run under wine and it may not. I was not able to find any information regarding this specific application. The easiest approach, therefore, would be to just try. Details instruction on wine can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wine. Here is a short overview. First, install wine. It can be found in the add/remove tool. You may need to show "all available applications". Once installed, open a terminal and change to the CD and then the directory containing the .exe install program. Then type

wine setup.exe

or whatever the name of the install program is. That should be it. It will add a app icon to the menu under wine. Then try to run it. If it works, great. If not, then there isn't going to be any way to run it in Linux. Remember, Linux is not windows and windows apps are not supposed to run. The fact that some do is the miracle. While your version of Mahjongg may be fancier or prettier or offer more options, part of switching to Linux is learning to use the tools and software available. If your version will not run, there are similar native apps available. Give then a try and see if they are sufficient.

Good Luck.

Hi Jim, I appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions. I probably will take your advice & try the similar native apps software. Can you suggest a few? I have no idea where to find them or what they would be titled. Thanks again for your research. Bless you for your patience!
Maybe when I get more adept at this I will try the wine. ... Marie

Well, the basic Mahjongg game is installed by default. It's under applications-games. You can install a couple more as well. I've never played them but they are available. To find them, open up add/remove (it's on the applications menu), make sure the "show" box says "all available applications" and then search for KMahjongg and Shisen-Sho and install them. There is also something called xmahjongg and kshisen but you will need to use the Synaptic Package Manager (under system-admin) to install them. They are not part of add/remove which is just the more popular subset of what Synaptic has.
