12.04 Software compatibility

Asked by Robert DuPont

I have been using Ubuntu for about a year and a half now. I use an ASUS EEE PC 1015 computer. I currently run 12.04. The issue I have is with the software center. There are no specifics at all on whether a program will run on 12.04. As I understand it, 12.04 is Unity whereas there is also GNOME platform, which is a different platform , correct? If so, Your software center needs to be better organized. if I use 12.04 you should really only list the programs and software that actually work in 12.04, or barring that, each program should indicate in BOLD TYPE that said program will not operate in 12.04. Not all of us that use Ubuntu are techno-geeks. We use Ubuntu because we want an alternative to Windows and Apple. If Unity is designed to be user-friendly, then you need to be specific about what works and what does not.

I am trying to get my EPSON NX230 printer to work, but there is no compatible software for Unity 12.04 apparently. But there is NO indication that the software in Software Center will work in 12.04 or not. and EPSON does not provide anything that works in 12.04. If you want Unity to become more popular, you got to get companies like EPSON and HP on board to create workarounds that are compatible.

Please have software programs say up-front whether the program works in Unity or not. Thank you

Dear Robert,

Loads of questions at the same time. Let's see if I can answer them all:

Unity/Gnome
Ubuntu uses gnome as graphical user interface, uses the standard gnome applications - but if you don't tell it between inputting your user name and your password at the login screen to use gnome's gnome shell for providing the buttons that start applications and allow to switch between them it delegates this single task to its own application, unity. (To be able to switch to gnome-shell instead you have to install it first, though).

Can't tell you which of the programs is better: gnome-shell is very usable if you go to http://extensions.gnome.org and configure it for your needs - and unity isn't extremely configurable but is usable out-of-the-box.
If you don't like any of these two choices you can install other programs for the same task instead like kiba-dock or gnome-classic as long as the gnome guys provide this package.

Programs that don't run
Normally the idea behind the software center is that it only contains programs that have been compiled for your specific ubuntu version and for which the packager and the community had a chance to test that they will run. Which programs give you so much trouble?

Epson
I always used epson products because they worked flawlessly with ubuntu. Even if my printer is from brother now my printer is still from epson.
The only thing that is scary: After it has been published they always need loads of time to release an official driver for a new version of ubuntu. I assume they ue the time to triple-check that everything works as fine as the user could expect. But since the developers always try to avoid changes in the interface between printer driver and printing system (that might break some old printer drivers and normally aren't really neccessary, anyway, since everything you need to control a printer is already there and working) I never experienced any trouble when downloading a printer driver that officially was for a signficantly older version of ubuntu directly from epson's homepage and using that one instead: In fact in most cases when they release a driver for a new ubuntu version the only thing that has changed is the name ofthe ubuntu version the driver is officially for.

Hello Robert,

A few quick points I think may help your understanding.

12.04, 12.10, 13.04, etc. are the code numbers of Ubuntu Distribution Releases.

Unity, GNOME Shell, etc. are Desktop Environments. Desktop Environments. A desktop environment is only the desktop interface you work with currently. They are easily interchangeable. For example, you could install Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity, then decide you don't like it and install GNOME Shell from the Software Center. The system log-in screen will allow you to easily switch DEs.

Now as to program compatibility. You can usually expect programs to be compatible with your distribution. Linux apps work through dependencies, so if your current installation is lacking anything separate that the program needs to run it will download it alongside the program. This is why you will try to download one file but you will notice the system is downloading like 10 other apps or so alongside it to make sure it will run. The Desktop Environment you are currently using is usually NOT a barrier to being able to install or run a program. If you are running GNOME Shell and want to use an app associated with KDE (for example Akregator), Ubuntu will simply pull in the necessary KDE files to make that program run.

This is usually also true across distributions. For example, I could run the latest version of Firefox (v20.0) on Ubuntu 12.04 if I wished though that is an older release.

Now as to your specific printer problem. Can I assume that you have already tried to connect the printer through the printers dialog (the CUPS service)? Printers in Linux are not usually installed through specific client programs but using a general software interface. If you did, what exactly was the error message you received?

Wow, thanks for your responses and help

The linux drivers from the epson site are downloaded but they do not work.
They probably would work with Gnome ??

I just downloaded the gnome shell, from the SC, now what ? How do I access
it ? the Dash on the dock does not recognize gnome shell. Or is this a
command line thing? I'm not savvy about these things. I'm a middle aged
fella who gets a bit cranky when things don't work so I apologize in
advance.

I had an Apple for years, a g3 iMac, PowerPC which worked great until they
stopped supporting it. I now use the ASUS, which is a nice machine,
considering the price. Sometimes I get frustrated with the Ubuntu, but it's
better than Windows, let me tell you.

Thanks again, I will follow up at a later time bye

Now the unfortunate thing is that I don't currently own an epson printer...
...do you get any error messages that might help me tracking down the problem?

If not let's hope somebody else has the same problem. It should be rather common: The only thing ubuntu differs from every other computer running gnome is the program (named "unity") that provides the buttons you click on when you try starting a program and that provides a handler for the ALT+TAB key combination.

The component of the system the printer is connected to is named cups: The Common Unix Printing System that is the same program apple uses for their computers - which was very lucky for me once: When HP did decide not to write any mac driver for my printer I compiled the ubuntu ones instead on my girlfriend's mac - and was surprised that that actually worked ;-)

Perhaps the epson driver is missing some cups component that isn't installed on your system. Did have this case once, but many years ago. The component that was missing then were the foomatic filters.

---

If the main problem is printing: Epson is proud that their printers all speak a common language so in theory any preinstalled epson driver for a similar printer should work even if trying this would be a last-resort step.

Kind regards,

   Gunter.

Unity is a shell for Gnome. Unity is not a desktop environment and does not replace Gnome like KDE or XFCE do. When you use Unity, Gnome is still the desktop and uses Compiz as the window manager.

When you run software centre, you will ONLY see packages from the repositories for Precise and nothing more (unless you mess with your OS package config). I have no idea where you get this notion of "only show packages that work in 12.04" as this is t e case by default. Similarly, packages known to work in Raring will be shown in Raring, you will not see Raring packages in Precise.

What is the output of:

lsb_release -a;uname -a;lsusb

Thanks

I base my theory of Software Center based on comments made for programs
that say it worked fine in previous Ubuntu editions , but not 12.04.
Software Center does have a lot of programs listed that work for say,
Kubuntu, or KDE, but many do not say anything about 12.04 compatibility. It
should say up-front whether it a program applies to 12.04. I'm probably
wrong, this is new to me so i'm a bit dim...

Anyway, I downloaded the Gnome shell as recommended. I need to know how to
launch it....

Thank you all, catch you later

All the packages you see will install and work in Precise. They are intended for that release. You can also run KDE based apps in Gnome without issue.

If you log off and select the Gnome Shell session from the login screen, it will run.

Hi all,

Found the Gnome shell. I am liking it so far. It seems my system works faster, but that's probably an illusion.

Anyway, my Epson printer problem continues. Any jobs I print are either pending or processing, nothing prints. I am using a usb cable at this point, the wireless never worked. Now on top of that the scanner, which worked fine before, is not working. I'm ready to throw this printer out the window. I should have bought a HP , but the basic printers look so flimsy.

I can't get any bug reports to show what the problem may be. The drivers from Epson do not work, nothing works.

he's dead Jim...

no, I'm afraid it did not. What's happening is the printer is acknowledged

That message would mean that the URL is unreachable.

...I think I found the reason:

The command wget downloads the file whose URL follows the word "wget". ...but your web browser seems to have thought the "-" after the word "printer" is a hyphen that allows for a line break so wget gets only the first line of the URL (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8850924/epson-inkjet-printer-) while the escpr_1.2.2-1lsb3.2_i386.deb standing in a new line is interpreted as a new command.

If you put the following command:

wget https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/8850924/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.2.2-1lsb3.2_i386.deb

all into the same line of the terminal the driver will be downloaded correctly. Afterwards the commant

sudo dpkg -i epson-inkjet-printer-escpr_1.2.2-1lsb3.2_i386.deb

looks in the current directory for the file you have just downloaded and install it on your system.
In my experience afterwards the printer is auto-detected once connected to the computer - or even (if it is a network printer) if it is only connected to the network the computer is, which still feels like magic to me: Sitting in a completely different room not connected to any cable (but to the wifi net) and still being able to press the print button any time I like.

OK , the problem is, the computer recognizes the existence of the
printer, but when I go to print. The job indicate 'pending' or
'processing' but nothing comes out. It gets stuck. I have the printer
directly connected to the computer...

OK... still no go. The computer does not detect the printer, says
'waiting for the printer' . I will try again but use GNOME shell and
if that makes a difference...

no difference with the printer status even using GNOME shell. it just
isn't working. I'm ready to throw my hands up. I just don't think the
Epson driver works in Unity or it may be the computer itself not
working well with the printer or 12.04. Who knows? it shouldn't be
this hard. I'll get an HP...

thanks everyone for trying to fix the printer problem. I will dump the Epson and go with HP, which I have found out after the fact seem to work well with Ubuntu/Linux better than any other brand
