Can receive no updates or upgrades 12.10
I am using a 3 year old Samsung laptop. Loaded a bad copy of 12.10 last Dec. Many glitches caused computer to crash frequently but was receiving updates and was getting better till about 1 month ago.
No longer receive any notifications even though system is set to request all Ubuntu security and 3rd party updates.
When I go into updater it says "Fiailed to Download Repository Information"
I created a new disc for 12.4LTS but it will not boot when I restart system with disc in DVD/CD drive.
I tried an older disc for 10.4 LTS that I used for an old pentium 4 last week but it would not boot that either.

Perhaps the following can help you:
- Open a terminal (Ctrl+Shift+t)
- type in
sudo software-
(If you want to save yourself from typing work normally you can skip a few letters by hitting the TAB key once or twice)
...and choose a different server.
If that doesn't help
sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
should either start an update manually or at least provide you with a helpful error message.

The problem leading to the "Failed to fetch cdrom" warning is caused by the fact, that your configuration instructs package management to always look for the original CD-ROM or DVD device, that was used when the system was set up.
How to cure:
open a terminal and issue the command
gksudo software-
This will ask for your password and open the configuration window for package management.
On the first and on the second tab you have unselect all entries that refer to CDs or DVDs (in your case there must be several such entries).
When you have done that try the commands
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
again and copy/paste all output into this question document as done before.
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Cole for more information if necessary.
