Terminal Issues? Can't updaye right and I don't know why.

Asked by Alexander Dalrymple

Ok, so I'm new to Ubuntu and have been asking a LOT of questions recently. You all have been so helpful to me. I run Ubuntu 12.10 on an X51 from Alienware and I've having update issues. I'll type "sudo apt-get update" and get this at the end:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

What's happening here and what can I do to fix it? Please be detailed. I'm new so I know next to NOTHING about this. It started when I tried to install Gnome3 but that got interupted with a shut down so I don't think it installed right. Then the removal process has been interupted by a shut down (Both shutdowns were user enacted) Since then, updates haven't worked right.

Oh, and I tried to install MyUnity. I've just read that it's not supported on 12.10 yet so ignore that part. What's going on with the last bit.

Most probably that PPA doesn´t support 12.10 ubuntu version.Remove that PPA from your source list and after that run

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Take a look here:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/myunity/ppa/ubuntu/dists/

You will see that the myunity PPA supports precise (Ubuntu 12.04) , but not quantal (Ubuntu 12.10).

You are running Quantal (Ubuntu 12.10), so you need to remove that PPA via Software Sources.

ppa.launchpad.net/myunity/ppa/ubuntu/dists/

Yes. The PPA doesn't support your release and should be removed. You can use software centre if you want. If you start adding 3rd party sources for packages to your OS then do not be surprised if you get issues.

It looks like you are trying to use ppas that are not there anymore.

I would remove them see here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/173195/how-do-i-remove-a-ppa-added-via-command-line

then try again

-------------------------------------------------------------
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade
------------------------------------------------------------

If it still does not work post the full output of these last commands

So, I removed them (Gnome 3 and MyUnity) from the source list and tried sudo apt-get update. Got this:
