No Unity after gnome:ppa added for Gnome 3.8 in Ubuntu 13.04

Asked by S. Patrikios

Well, it was a long day.
After adding the ppa for gnome 3.8, Software Updater stopped in the middle of the job (linux kernel 3.8.0.25?), which I finished manually.
Then I could have no other wallpaper, but white, no matter what.
So far, Unity was functioning more or less better than gnome.
Then I changed my theme to MediteraneanDark something.
All of a sudden I could have my dark wallpeper allright, but... I had no Unity desktop any more.
Every manu choice stayed on the desktop ontop of the other, the Unity bar was unreadable, a blur of colours, and when I tried to take a snapshot, everything froze (twice)!
I had to turn the system off the hard way.
Open to suggestions guys!

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Certainly this is not a bug , and also we cannot support here an Unreleased version of Ubuntu. (13.04).

Do not experiment with PPAs , especially if you running a development branch of Ubuntu.

It would be a good idea to REinstall Ubuntu 13.04 , and participate in bugs (if any).
Be aware that you will have not any support here , because of unreleased version.

That was a quick one! Not adventurous, but quick.
Thought of reinstalling 13.04, but I would rather see this out, for as long as the system functions!
Thanks anyway.

Then I suggest you report a bug. Raring isnt ready or stable. I recommend you use ppa-purge so that you can report effective bugs as you will not have unofficial packages in your OS.

The same happened to me fortunately I had a Clonezilla backup to help me get back as ppa-purge did not help.
I thought something wrong might have happened so I reinstalled it again and the same story repeated itself.

Gnome 3.8 IS NOT SUPPORTED OFFICIAL in Ubuntu 13.04.

Anyone who adds an unsupported and untrusted PPA , should consider first that anything can be happen , and If system crash then Ubuntu has nothing to do with this.

Read the statement

"You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3 to your system's Software Sources. "

https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team/+archive/gnome3
