Can I download Ubuntu on the internet to the CD on my machine to install and familiarise myself on my second
laptop without disturbing my live system

I don't understand you - on your first computer just download file and burn it on CD - why do you thing that this "action" can disrupt your system?

Don't be afraid to ask.
It seems you don't have much experience with computers, but we can help.

You can download Ubuntu on your main computer and burn it to CD (burn it as a CD image, not as a file!) without afecting your PC.

Once the CD is burnt you can use to try Ubuntu in any PC you like. In fact, if you boot with the CD, Ubuntu will pop but will NOT touch your hard disk until you tell it to install.
