canon MF4150 print driver

Asked by Tony Esposito

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 along side windows. I have a Canon Imageclass MF4150 printer. I can't get it to work. I have read all the old post about downloading the driver from Asia and such and converting it and nothing. It still doesn't work. I would think by now the latest version of Ubuntu would have the driver built in. Ubuntu is no good to me if I can't get it to print. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tony Esposito

Did you check the Canon Europe website for drivers?

I downloaded and installed the Europe website driver and it still doesn't work with 12.10, Canon was no help when I contacted them. This printer is no longer supported. I don't even care about the Multi Function working, I just want to be able to print.

I had the same problem for YEARS, I was only able to scan with xsane but never able to print, however the latest version of the UFR II drivers (v2.70) seems to have solved the problem on my 64-bit ubuntu 13.04 machine !

I was then also able to print to it over the network from a windows machine (my ubuntu machine being the print server) by specifying the network location as http://a.b.c.d/printers/Canon-MF4100-Series

I then tried to print to it from a mac but got error "Canon UFR II Printer Driver - Connection Method not supported.: -9786" even though I had specified the printer correctly (IP address, and printers/Canon-MF4100-Series as the queue).
Then I found out Canon has a totally different driver out; I was using v2.43 but found they have a completely new one, dated October 2013 with filename Mac_UFRII_Ver1020_02.dmg and with that driver I was able to print to the MF4150 printer that is connected to my ubuntu machine.

So looks like Canon is finally giving this printer the attention it deserved !!! I'm very happy now!

TL;DR: Install latest drivers v2.70 or later.

I just discovered the recent cups bugfix involving this printer:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/1160638

I'm not sure if it's the latest canon version 2.70 drivers I recently installed, or the cups version 1.6.2-1ubuntu4 fix above that resolved the issue, but at least for me the issue is solved, on both Ubuntu 13.04 raring and 13.10 saucy (cups 1.7.0~rc1-0ubuntu5).

Has anyone been able to print to the MF4150 with Trusty (14.04) ? I booted the live CD and installed the canon drivers but nothing comes out of the printer when I try to print, however the system thinks everything is ok, there are no errors and the print queue is not left with unfinished jobs.

I did some more testing. The 32-bit trusty live cd can print, the 64-bit live cd cannot.
In both cases I installed the canon 2.80 drivers (Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V280_us_EN.tar.gz), and used the 32 bit and 64 bit deb files respectively, after installing the necessary dependencies (apt-get install libglade2-0).

The same drivers (2.80, 64bit) work on my 64-bit Saucy installation. So, something's miss with 64-bit trusty as far as this printer is concerned.

It has now been a full year and five + months since the last comment to this thread. I have been happily printing to my Canon ImageCLASS MF4350d printer using 14.04 (Trusty) 64-bit but this was from an upgrade of 13.10 where it was alos printing successfully. Over the weekend, I decide to upgrade to 15.10 but Plasma 5 was too big of a change for me so I reverted to 14.10 64-bit (via a fresh install). However, I'm back to all the old problems with the Canon drivers. They've released v3.00 now and following all the old steps, I can get the printer recognized and working, however, it does not print anything and there are no errors. I suspect it's down to missing 32-bit libs again, but ia32-libs is no longer part of this distribution:

footer@kubuntu64:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package ia32-libs is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
  lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 lib32bz2-1.0

E: Package 'ia32-libs' has no installation candidate

So, has anyone else been down this path recently? Or do I have to go back to an older distribution that works with this printer and then upgrade? (PAINFUL!)

Thanks.

14.10 is EOL and not supported by the Ubuntu community in any way

NEVER MIND! Just go get the latest drivers from Canon (I'm using v3.00, released 05/10/2015) and read the darn installation guide that comes with it!! There's an install file (./install.sh) that does EVERYTHING for you and the printer works from the git go!! Wow!! So happy!! I think I'll stay with 14.04 for awhile longer and be happy.

I did not say anything about 14.10 and to be honest, have no intention of going there. I'm going to stick with 14.04 (Trusty) LTS 64-bit for now.

Can you help with this problem?
