Mouse over suport for MIDI stopped working after upgrade

Asked by bsalem

I ran Nautalus as the file manager in Ubuntu 10.10, and mouse over on a MIDI or MP3 file would play the file.

But no more.

Iam currently running (uname -a)

Linux brucesalem-FQ582AA-ABA-SR5710F 3.0.0-30-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 2 22:39:01 UTC 2013 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

(Now, I can't remember the shell comand to get the Ubuntu version, so why that isn't part of a very well known shell command is beyond me.)

I think I am running Ubuntu 11.10

In any case mouse over does not play MIDI files any more, in fact the only way I can play them on this system is now with Timidity.
I can play MP3's with Audaceous, ut not ith any other player.

So doing an upgrade lost functionality I had with an unsupported rev.

I have the ALSA soundcard driver running, and jackd will not run.

How can I get MIDI and MP3 support back in a file mamager? How can I get more players to work. I do NOT like bansshee, so
don.t even bother.

I thought that I installed the Gstreamer stuff.

I verified that the gstreamer stuff is installed. If I need to give you diagnostic on that, tell me the shell command you need me to put into to get info. DMESG, /var/log/messages?

Sorry for the typo.

What about the packages that are not needed? I went on the let the install
of tis package proceed.
It looks like it succeeded.

I will test, sould I make haste to do "autoremove"?

You typo'd the command (it's sushi, not sush1).

You can use the autoremove to free up a little disk space, but it is not urgent.
Please let me/us know how sushi works.

sushi installed, and I got a new kernel through ordinary upgrades, the
system has been rebooted.

This has no effect in either nautalus or the other default file manager.

Several apps appear to accept and play sound files but do not produce any
sound.

Only Timidity will play midi files and only audaceous will play MP3.

I judge that upgrading from U 11.04 to U 11.10 broke applications, and all
this had worked all the way back to U 8.10.

I am becomming very despondent about Ubuntu and Gnome 3. I am considering
going to a KDE only system, Slackware perhaps, possibly Puppy.

I think I am using the ALSA driver.

Firefox seems to start the media player. It produces that stupid graphics
stiff, but the slider moves, so it thinks it is producing something, but no
sound.

BTW I wish lsb_release had a different name. Propose a name that has some
value and I will make a soft-link so I can remember the SB.

Lets see, maybe ubuntu_release? I'll either put an alias in my .bashrc or
plop a link where it lives, how about that? Why can't YOU guys think of
that?

Would actually be better as an alias because it needs the option, I will
remove the link and recreate it as an alias. This might want to be put
in the /etc/skel dir under the bashrc that is copied for new accounts.

So, the item of this question is still not resolved. installing gnome-sushi
had no
 effect. Something is fishy :-)

This question was expired because it remained in the 'Open' state without activity for the last 15 days.

Well, the matter is still unresolved. No-one came up with an idea. Don't
engineers from Canonical read these? Guess I ought to file a bug. I've got
the nonfree media drivers loaded. It seems like it is a file manager
problem like ly caused by gnome misconfiguration after Unity. I can say
debaco!

It is still a problem. MIDI does work in Totem, when it didn't work in
11.10 and does in timidity, but mouse did over in nutautilus in 10.10 and
has failed in that browser since upgrading to the later versions.

Have you googled for something like "nautilus mouse play file"? You get several hits telling you that the sound preview needs rhythmbox

e.g http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1480219

@Manfred: that was for the nautilus in GNOME2.

@bsalem: To activate the preview with gnome-sushi, left-click the file and hit space.
The preview can be closed by hitting space again, or escape.
