Could not initialize the package information

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric-security_universe_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

this is the message I received in its whole forme nothing less or more just as I received it .

okey thanks for your help anyway the problem is that I do not understand this technical language,so I can not help my ignorance,I hope and apreciate if you make it too simple sorry for my lack of technical knowlege.
In fact the problem starts as I was trying to make an USB bootable,so as I do not know how to do it - I am autodidacta person all what I know even languages I learn it by myself- so I started to look into google and put question as how can I make an usb bootable so as any one knows it came many answers ,I tried some but I could not say realy which one give me the bug.In the end till now I find three problems my update manager is damaged ,the ubuntu software do not respond and todat I received some document and I could not open them and I received a message saying:
Dowenloader Error
/tmp/imagen.jpg could not be opened,because the associated helper application does not exist.change the association in your preferences.
 So its all I can give as information I have

You don't have to be familiar with anything except copying and pasting text which I am very sure you can do. Copy the first line I gave and paste it to the terminal and hit ENTER. Then repeat with the second. Copy the output (again, copying and pasting, nothing new or taxing) and paste it as an update. Nothing to do with any sort of 'technical language' at all.

You do not need to be an expert at all to follow the instructions I gave you.

The procedure explains how to copy-paste in Ubuntu and how to access the
Linux Terminal.

In Windows, you also need to copy-paste stuff from time to time, so it
is not complicated.

okay till now I am successful thanks to you both .I used on the terminal the codes you provided me Andrew and its comes out untill and i do not know what to do next .

thanks alot mates I think the problem is resolved and I hope so ,first now I can run the update manager,second i can run as well ubuntu software center as well ,but the attachement I received to day I could not and I already spook about it before and even I put the message I received when the opening attachement failled.

Oneiric is EOL in April 2013. You may want to upgrade soon.
