frozen screen even after reboot

Asked by Terry Marksberry

With no action by me, a Keyring dialogue box came up asking for my password overlaid by a "Type to Search" box. The screen is frozen and no mouse or keyboard stroke having any affect. I can only reboot by turning off the PC but after Ubuntu restarts, the same thing occurs immediately with no chance to do anything.

Dead in the water! Anything I can do short of reloading Ubuntu and losing all of my data?

I never saw a dialog box "Type to search" in Ubuntu , that freezes the screen and the Operating System.
Can you take a screenshot (mobile phone) and upload it to a free hosting site and give here the link , so we can see the exact screen ?
e.g http://imgur.com/

Also , can you boot from [Recovery Mode] ?
Is this a regular installation or something like wubi.exe ? (install Ubuntu from within Windows)

Thanks

Screen shots attached. I tried to upload to imgur and it crashed? This
is just a regular installation in a desktop PC. I can boot into the
Recovery Menu.

You cannot attach files here in Launchpad answers tracker , so I told you to upload the picture somewhere and give here the link.

You can attach files only in bug tracker.

Try again to another free image hosting. e.g http://imageshack.us/

Thanks

I cannot see the picture , sorry. The message I'm receiving when I click the link(s) is something about "Violation of Terms" or "the file removed by user".

Well , I don't know what is this "Type to Search" box. Probably some program you installed ? and it runs on startup...

But the other box , behind this "Type to Search" box , is the login keyring. Are you using the automatic login feature ? If yes , then either you must disable autologin or clear up the password. The first is more secure.

Can't you click the box behind this "Type for search" box ? It wants to write your password. The password you gave when you installed Ubuntu. The User's password. Then it will unlock.

If you cannot do that , then you must login from the Console Mode (CTRL+ALT+F2) or boot from a Live media of Ubuntu (CD/DVD/USB) and use the chroot utility and try to fix the problem.

Both procedures (Console mode and/or Chroot) are not easy for a non experienced user.

But tell me , are using the autologin ? If yes , maybe we can fix this from Console Mode.

I do not have to enter a password when I boot the system. Nothing has
been installed that did not come through the Ubuntu software center.
When I hit Cntr-Alt-F2 I go to a login prompt.

OK , then login from this prompt. Give your username & password and then execute this command

sudo service lightdm stop (it will ask again for your password).

Then we must use the nano editor to edit a file ..

sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

at the opened window you will see the "autologin-user= ....." line . You have to remove your name from there.Your user's name.

To save the document hit CTRL+X , then Y(es) and then [Enter] .

Now give the command

sudo service lightdm start

and the login screen will come back , but you must enter your password now , to login.

If you login without problems and then you have a working desktop we can clear up the password from the keyring and we can re-enalbe the auto-login feature.
Also we can search about this program at startup programs . This "type to search" box.

Thanks

OK, followed your directions. Everything worked and got back to the main
screen. The keyring box was gone. The "type to search" box was still
there, screen not locked. I clicked on the down arrow at the upper
right of the box and it gave me to option to quit. It had a GNOME label
at the top.

So whats the problem now ? To remove this "type to search" box ? Check on startup applications and see if you can disable it from there.

Mark the question as solved (by marking the answer that solved it) when done.

Thanks

Disabling the auto login enabled me to resolve the problem and close the "Type to Search" box. Thank you very much for your assistance.
