Sunbird strange error. plz help

Asked by Derkach Maxim

Hi, when I try to execute Sunbird, it stuck, with the following error:
(QFA)Talkback error: can't initialize
But it works well when I execute it as a root. I tried already 0.5 and 0.7 versions from mozilla.com and from Ubuntu repository with the same result. Dont know what to do, plz help.

maybe something is wrong with the permissions of the configuration files ?

I believe they are in ~/.mozilla/sunbird

could you include the output of

ls -lad ~/.mozilla; ls -lad ~/.mozilla/sunbird; ls -laR ~/.mozilla/sunbird

strange, the group id of these files seems to have 3 different values : maxim, clarke or root

I'd suggest changing the group owenership of all these files to your group id (close sunbird before doing any changes)

to see what your group id is type
id
in a terminal

id should output something like this :

uid=1000(koen) gid=1000(koen) groups=4(adm),20(dialout),24(cdrom),25(floppy),29(audio),30(dip),44(video),46(plugdev),104(scanner),108(lpadmin),110(admin),115(netdev),117(powerdev),1000(koen)

group id is here koen from gid=1000(koen)

once you know what your group id is (probably maxim), change the group id of the files to your group in the sunbird directory by issuing the following command

sudo chgrp -R maxim ~/.mozilla/sunbird

if this does not solve the issue you could try removing the sunbird conf directory to see whether it solves the issue
mv ~/.mozilla/sunbird ~/.mozilla/sunbird.bak
