Why such an old release? Lucid desktop has less than 9 months support left. Precise is not only the latest release of Ubuntu it is also LTS o is supported until 2017...

there is a driver on the Lexmark site:

cd $HOME
wget http://downloads.lexmark.com/downloads/cpd/lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz
sudo apt-get install unp
unp ./lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz
rm ./lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh.tar.gz
gksudo ./lexmark-inkjet-legacy-1.0-1.i386.deb.sh

And it will install the printer driver

In answer to your question: hadn't thought about it. I suppose I ought to go to Ubuntu and do that.

for the second part: I clicked onto the link, downloaded it, pressed the down load and I got this message:

when did I mention to run gedit?

You didn't--this is part of the error message that came up when I tried to open the download.

In a terminal

Okay, I opened a terminal. I pasted in the commands you gave me, line by line, hitting 'enter' after each line. Now it's asking for my password. When I type it in, nothing appears in the screen; I hit 'enter' anyway and get this:

What am I doing wrong?

I did that right from the first. The cursor never moved when I input my password until the fourth time, then it actually showed what I typed. This is what it reads now (I input the x's on this email where my password would be):

 Awhile back. I had to change my password. This is a used computer, and the person from whom I obtained it did not give me the password. I was able to change it with help from you, I think. I've had no difficulty using my password for anything until now

Okay, it installed--at least when I hit 'print,' it says it's sending it to my LexMark Pro, it says the job printed, but it doesn't actually print it--what now?

Like I said before, you don't get any feedback with sudo, gksudo just gives a pretty GUI and feedbanck, so you weren't typing your password when you used sudo.

I recommend you remove the printer from Ubuntu and power off the printer, then reboot, log in then turn on the printer and re-add
