help get/installing drivers LexMark ProPlatinum 900
I've been trying to get and install the driver for my new all-in-one printer--LexMark ProPlatinum 900. Of course, the disc only works for Mac/Windows, the instructions say to go to LexMark's site and the one link I need will come up. Several come up, and I can't figure out which to use (64-bit? 32-bit?). When I call for help, they say tell me to call during weekdays at times that I'm not home/available.
Which do I use? How do I get my printer to work with my computer? I'm using:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS
- the Lucid Lynx - released in April 2010 and supported until April 2013

Okay. First, let me thank you for efforts to help me. Next, may I ask that you reply for the complete idiot? Copy the command from where--on the last email? How do I copy it to the terminal? After, I think that you mean to copy the result and paste it onto the reply email, yes?
Okay (again:). I highlighted and copied the first line, then followed your instructions and got this:
bill@asus-
LSB Version: core-2.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS
Release: 10.04
Codename: lucid
bill@asus-
I highlighted and copied the second line and got this:
bill@asus-
Linux asus-desktop 2.6.32-42-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:56:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
bill@asus-
I highlighted and copied the third line and got this:
bill@asus-

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

Are these what you meant?

Why such an old release? Lucid desktop has less than 9 months support left. Precise is not only the latest release of Ubuntu it is also LTS o is supported until 2017...
there is a driver on the Lexmark site:
cd $HOME
wget http://
sudo apt-get install unp
unp ./lexmark-
rm ./lexmark-
gksudo ./lexmark-
And it will install the printer driver

In answer to your question: hadn't thought about it. I suppose I ought to go to Ubuntu and do that.
for the second part: I clicked onto the link, downloaded it, pressed the down load and I got this message:
Could not open the file /home/bill/
gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.

Okay, I opened a terminal. I pasted in the commands you gave me, line by line, hitting 'enter' after each line. Now it's asking for my password. When I type it in, nothing appears in the screen; I hit 'enter' anyway and get this:
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for bill:
What am I doing wrong?

I did that right from the first. The cursor never moved when I input my password until the fourth time, then it actually showed what I typed. This is what it reads now (I input the x's on this email where my password would be):
bill@asus-
[sudo] password for bill:
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for bill:
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for bill:
Sorry, try again.
sudo: 3 incorrect password attempts
bill@asus-
palehua: command not found
bill@asus-
Awhile back. I had to change my password. This is a used computer, and the person from whom I obtained it did not give me the password. I was able to change it with help from you, I think. I've had no difficulty using my password for anything until now

Okay, it installed--at least when I hit 'print,' it says it's sending it to my LexMark Pro, it says the job printed, but it doesn't actually print it--what now?

Like I said before, you don't get any feedback with sudo, gksudo just gives a pretty GUI and feedbanck, so you weren't typing your password when you used sudo.
I recommend you remove the printer from Ubuntu and power off the printer, then reboot, log in then turn on the printer and re-add
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask RL Maiden for more information if necessary.
