XGL Desktop causes Screen Savers to Hang

After I installed the XGL Desktop to enable 3D graphics on my ATI Radeon Express 1100, my Screen Saver now works intermittently. Sometimes it works; most of the time it just hangs with a blank screen.
It works perfectly in GNOME Failsafe Desktop and worked perfectly before installing the XGL Desktop.
Can anyone provide any insight as to why this is happening?
