Corruption in Power Manager or XGL Desktop?

Asked by coljohnhannibalsmith

I recently installed the "XGL Desktop" or is it "XGL Server" to enable 3D Acceleartion of my ATI Radeon Express 1100 Graphics on my Acer 5102WLMi Laptop. Prior to installing XGL, the Power Management console appeared to be working correctly and I had it set to never turn off the display on AC; but to turn it off after 10 minutes on battery. I also had the Screen Saver set to come on after 5 minutes. So what has been happening is that when I have the unit on AC power, with the battery icon showing fully charged, the screen saver comes on after 5 minutes and the screen goes blank after 10 minutes, just as if it were running on battery power alone. BTW, the battery icon shows the PLUG icon next to it, when on AC Power and changing the "On Battery" setting to "Never Turn Off Display: didn't help. In case you're wondering, I was running on battery when I originally installed XGL.

The XGL settings under Applications also behaves strangely. I have to select it from the menu TWICE before the application will open. This behavior is NOT intermittant. This is what always happens.

Another inexplicable behavior of Power Manager is that when I change the General settings to "Shut Down," when I press the Power Button, instead of "Ask Me," it always asks me anyway. I am assuming however, that the "Power Button" is the icon in the upper right coner of the desktop that I normally click on to Shut Down or Restart the system rather than the UNIT's power button, which will remove power from the unit entirely.

Based on the number of threads on similar topics, it appears Power Manager has some bugs and it appears XGL may have some bugs as well. Should I reinstall BOTH of these applications and should I also rename one or more configuration files?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks, John

XGL, among other things, historically can mess up Power Management, Gaming
(slow drawing/low FPS), and much more along those lines. I'm pretty sure the
X1100 is supported by the new ATI drivers, which you don't need to use XGL
for, and can simply flick on compositing in a normal environment (AIGLX).

Bryan,

I've removed "xserver-xgl" and I can now launch the "GL Desktop" with just 1 double-click instead of 2; however, the power management issue persists. Is there anything else I need to uninstall? I have "compiz" installed; but I think it's necessary to set advanced Desktop effects.

Oh, and BTW, how do I flick-on compositing?

Thanks, John

More info:

When I uninstalled xserver-xgl I lost the ability to use that nifty 3D rotating-desktop effect to change desktops. Well, I think that's what caused it. I didn't lose that ability right away; I uninstalled one or two other compiz related components and one of these other ones may have done it as well.

I know there's a compositing bit in the xorg.conf file; but setting this to "1" doesn't seem to do anything or perhaps I need to remove some other component first before this will work. I'm lost without a map.

More info:

I located the file /home/john/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/timeout/%gconf.xml; it's contents are as follows:

<gconf>

</gconf>

The file /home/john/.gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/%gconf.xml is empty.

When I launch System/Preferences/Power_Management and alter the "Timeout Slider Bars," the contents of this file are indeed changed; however they have no effect on the system, when running "xserver-xgl." It appears that Power_Management is reading some kind of "startup" configuration file, when xserver-xgl is running, very much like how the environment variables are setup immediately after install. It seems to me what's necessary is just a couple lines of code to force Power_Management to read %gconf.xml, while xserver-xgl is running. I suspect this was changed in the xgl configuration script. Another option would be to install an "xgl specific" Power_Management utility that's invoked whenever xserver-xgl is running.

Anyone have any thoughts on his?
