gnome panels: howto: speed up auto-hide/show of panels?

Asked by bubbafrye

is there a way to eliminate (or adjust) the lag between mouse-over and un-hide of 'auto-hidden' panels? I am adding many applications to a top-panel, and would like it to pop out instantly when I try to access it (rather than that ~1 second pause).

I thought I saw an article on this, but have yet been able to find it again.

Thanks.

Run gconf-editor and navigate to
/apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/unhide_delay

"Specifies the number of milliseconds delay after the pointer enters the panel area before the panel is automatically re-shown. This key is only relevant if the auto_hide key is true. "

And of course..
/apps/panel/toplevels/top_panel_screen0/hide_delay

Specifies the number of milliseconds delay after the pointer leaves the panel area before the panel is automatically hidden. This key is only relevant if the auto_hide key is true.

And the same for
/apps/panel/toplevels/bottom_panel_screen0/unhide_delay
/apps/panel/toplevels/bottom_panel_screen0/hide_delay

Double click a line, change the value and OK it. Change takes effect immediately.

Thanks Alan - worked like a champ.

being very new to Linux myself I would like to remind other folks out there that to access 'gconf-editor' you simply need to type that into a Teminal window.

now if I could just change the panels' font color....

Great! If you wouldn't mind tagging this as a gnome-panel question and ticking it as answered, that'd be great.

Sorry I can't help with the font colours.

jaunty 9.04,
Followed directions above, the location of the settings was slightly different, but the size worked for the go away, come back feature ,but the delay did not change at all, or at least, not before I have rebooted, which will be a while :-)

You may still find that their is still an unwanted delay or may want the panel to appear 'instantly'.
Even with the time set to 0 it will not appear/ disappear instantly.

To achieve this effect the 'enable animations' should be turned off.

Also, instead of using the terminal (which may be considered 'scary' to new users) the configuration editor can usually be found under Applications > System tools

Yeah, I kind of figured that the animations were the issue. It'd be nice to change the speed of those. Next time that I'm not too busy or too lazy I'm going to turn animations off. :-)

to adjust speed of animation add a new key 'animation_speed'. Possible values are "slow", "medium" and "fast".

This value is missing from gconf-editor (Karmic) so I had to modify it through gconftool-2. But first I had to locate my top panels config file, which turned out to be "bottom_panel_screen0". The easiest way to locate it was to set its height to 149, and grep all .xml files under ~/.gconf
