Obviously, if you can ping other pc on the network, network is up and it is working...
If you can surf internet by putting ip number try http://82.105.36.210/ you have only to setup the dns for your GNU Ubuntu Linux pc.
Do it from System->Administration->Network
Simply put your provider or your or Opendns primary and secondary dns ip number.
Opendns ip are 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

If you are still in trouble please put as default gateway the ip of pc or router connected to internet.

If this don't work please give us more infos about your network configuration...

Hope this helps

In the terminal, please run the command "ifconfig", "lspci", and the relevant lines from "dmsg" and post the results here if you can.

The "SIS968" appears to be the chipset used, not in fact the Ethernet controller.

You are definitely not the first to have this problem with this model of computer.

I see at least two other cases where people gave up and started using another PCI card and disabled the integrated one, but because you can ping, I have hope for you. Can you ping computers outside of your home network?

.

Can you help with this problem?
