E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

i've reported this, don't know enough to say whether it's a bug or not
but it came up as i was following advice on getting the mplayer to work
thanks

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a
Then make sure your Ubuntu is updated

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Hope this helps

hi,
thanks, i've now regained internet usage! so thanks for that,
and i thought it was completely fixed, but then i re tried to download realplayer to listen to radio on the internet and the problem kind of re occurred,

and flagged up this message as the system started to crash and produced a multitude of identical windows and froze for a while

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

sorry i don't know what this is, i did re attempt to type
'dpkg --configure -a' into the terminal but it refused to do anything,

thank you for your patience
sandra

hi,
just re running through, and started to look at ubuntu's website, followed their how to get updates instructions
to be told the software index is broken, gave me instructions to follow to fix
the problem, but the terminal is telling me i need a superuser 'password/permission'? the exact term escapes me to proceed
wondered if this and the other problems are interrelated?
just thought i should let you know anyway,
thanks for your help it's much appreciated

hi,
thanks for your advice, i've followed your instructions to the letter, and it appears to have updated itself,
but, i tried to listen to the radio over firefox and it is still saying i'm missing essential plug-ins
so i clicked on the download link and it went through it's routine of asking which plug-in etc
but then flagged up the same fault again

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E:_cache->open()failed,please report.

i went and tried to type instructions into the terminal but it requested a superuser password after i'd given it mine
sorry this fault is still a problem
cheers
sandra
