7.10 install freezes at libc6-udeb

Asked by Bret Levy

I've read most/all of the posts about 7.10 installation freezing (or aborting) while copying libc6-udeb. I have burned 3 cds all using different computers and drives and using different media (TDK, Maxell and something unknown). All fail exactly the same way, at 21%. I tried putting the hdparm=-d1 boot option that I saw in one post somewhere, but that made no difference, The server is a dual zeon 1.x Ghz with 2GB ram and HARDWARE RAID hds (it is a Dell 2u rack server with a perc raid controller -- could this be the issue??)

I have successfully installed various versions of Red Hat and Suse on this (or identical) boxes. It has Suse on it now (9.x). I would like to have Ubuntu!

Can someone help me make this work!!!! I am downloading the alternate cd now, I will update this post when information changes.

Thanks all,
Bret

I am in the exact same boat. I've been playing around with this and have noted the following.

I get the same error with Ubuntu 7.04.
Ubuntu 6.06 installs without issues.
The CDs verify as good. MD5SUMS are all ok.

I'm on a Dell PowerEdge 2500.

Update, I've attempted the install on a VMWare Server using the same disks, and it works fine. The install works fine. Its something specific with the hardware on these systems affected.

The oddity on this server is that the floppy and cdrom both run off the same cable... I'm used to HP servers that have true IDE and SATA CD-Roms.

The CD-ROM/floppy combo is something to investigate. I have that same scenario in my Dell 2450's (which are a few years old). I may try to do a swap out of the drive. It looks like this combo device is a non-standard size, so I may have to rig it a bit. I will try in the next few days and see if that makes a difference.

Update:

If you wait long enough (several minutes, 5-6+), the install will eventually "fail" with some sort of CD rom error. The CD integrity check will also fail at some point after a long delay. So it seems that there is an issue with the Dell CDR device somehow. All other OSes install, so it is something the Ubuntu code doesn't like (or this version doesn't like).

Still investigating...

Yes, no matter what I do I can't get Ubuntu 7.10 to install on a Dell 2450 rack server. It appears that there is some incompatibility between the installer and the CD-ROM in the machine (it is a combined floppy/CD, and it uses a "proprietary" interface, so it is not as easy as just dropping in a new CD). The machine is all SCSI, including the CD/floppy, and I don't figure I can find a SCSI replacement anymore. Although I know the drive to be working (see below).

I have tried several 7.10 disks and also the "alternate" iso. All fail at exactly the same place (21%, "retrieving libc6-udeb"). I tried installing a command-line kernel too. Same result.

I can install Windows and Suse 10 on this box with no problem, so the problem is Ubuntu-specific (and possibly 7.10-specific).

I really, really, really want Ubuntu 7.10 server installed, but I don't have a lot of time, and both Suse and Red Hat install fine.

H E L P . . .

Thanks,
Bret

I have struggled with this issue, and believe that I have a workaround. My Dell 2450 will not boot from a USB CD/DVD drive. However, during the install, the USB drive is detected, and I discovered completely by accident a way to install Ubuntu - at least through version 8.04.1, and other distributions, too.

I create two installation CD's. I use a Sony USB CD/DVD drive, and then put an installation CD in both the external and internal drives. Boot the system from the disk in the internal drive, and begin the installation. Once the kernel loads, it scans the hardware. It will fail to find the internal drive, but it will find the external USB drive, and proceed to install the system using that disk. Twenty minutes later I have a system running Ubuntu 8.04.1.

Other details: My Delll 2450 has three 36G drives, configured as a Raid0 stripe container. Ubuntu sees it as a single drive.

I've used a similar process to install SUSE 11 and 11.1, using the Netinstall CD in the internal drive, and a DVD install disk in the external CD/DVD.

As always, your mileage may vary. Am interested in anyone else's experience with this procedure.
