Well, neither. If you are upgrading you would use the upgrade tool. When you open update manager it will tell you there is a new version and give you the option to install.

If you downloaded a new CD iso off the Ubuntu site then you need to burn it to a CD and do a new install. There might be a way to upgrade from the CD but I've tried that. Normally you upgrade with the update manager or install fresh.

Thanks, but interestingly, I do not have any "update manager" listed in my admin or preferences menu! Should I re-install (from CD) my original 7.4??

Check the content of your /etc/lsb-release file. If it is like this:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10
DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10"

Then you have successfully upgraded to 7.10

Thank you Cesare, but
I am the eternal novice! Just entering those commands in the terminal did nothing for me. There must be other, preparatory commands to use first, right? Such as sudo??
