Long printing lead times

Asked by Per Anton Rønning

Distro: Linux Mint 12 (Lisa) , 32 bits. Printer: HP Officejet 6000 E609a Driver version hpcups 3.12.4
Especially when printing a page with colors on it it takes a long time until the printer starts up.
Example 1: Right now I have a document in the queue starting at 12:23:53, and the time is now 12:45:00 The document is 1 page long.
Example 2: A 3 page Libre Office document containg a small color picture took 12 minutes 19 seconds between start and finish according to HPLIP Status Monitor. Black&White documents seems to go a bit faster.
During the process I sometimes get as popup message asking whether the printer is connected, why I get this message I do not know, because the printer is definitely switched on and the cable is conneted.
HP Device manager printer control reports nothing peculiar, the document's status is "printing".
Can I do something to speed up this process? I suppose this must be a software (configurqation?) problem and not a hrdware problem. The printer performs very well when it finally gets its output.
To be on the safe side I also stop and start the print queue in the printer control section before starting the print. But I guess this is has no effect, or has it?

Additional info:
The document took approx 30 minutes to print, 12:23:53 - 12:54:05, and it was 1.5 pages long with one color (blue).
Is not this a long time for preparing the printing of such a small document?

Mint isn't supported here, this is Ubuntu support. NONE of the 'ubuntu based' distros are supported here. These include (but are not limited to):
Mint
Backtrack
Gnewsense
Pinguy
Ultimate
Ymlf

Mint has it's own forum:
