Ubuntu 7.10

Asked by AaronStewart

I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 with the kernel that came with the CD. I'm new to any other OS other than windows. I'm using a N73 which is the only way with which I connect to internet and while tryin to do so, I get some error messages in the System Log (like my n73 modem was not detected). I can't update my kernel unless I connect to internet.

Would be thankful for all who try to help me and more thankful for the one who provides me a solution...

Regards,
Aaron Stewart

I tried pairing the mobile with comp and I don't have any issues. When I was trying to configure my modem, the username should be empty and I can't proceed without providing a username. I tried editing the configuration file but I'm getting a error response stating that I don't have permissions to modify it. I checked the permissions but found that the user "/root" has the permission to do that. I neither can't log on as "/root" as I'm getting a message that I can't log on as admin from this screen..
Please tell me what to do..

Any help would be thanked!!!

I went through the posts and found that they're just to share the internet connection for the desktop to the mobile....

What I'm trying to do is, use my N73 as a dial-up modem and connect my computer to it...

Hi Aaron,

I don't have experience with that Nokia, but if you need to change the config file you'll have to use "sudo".
It is a specialty of ubuntu that the root account is not activated.
This is done to protect the user from himself - many people shoot themselves in the foot when using the root account...
So, when you need to execute <command> with root privileges you pre-pend sudo, like:
sudo <command>.
To edit the config file: sudo gedit
or sudo nano <whatever the name and path of the file is>

This is probably not going to solve your modem issue, so you should answer to this post in order to keep yours open and on top of the list.

Best regards

Oliver
