installing ubuntu 7.10

Asked by Rudolf Arnold

I received the original 7.10 CD trough the mail. The PC boots. loads the kernel and I have a menu. Choosing 1. install it take a very long time to get a brown screen with 2 icons in the upper left part of the screen. "examples" and "install" I double click install and then got a yellow screen, sometime with sometime without the mouse. the CD is still blinking. NOTHING happens for 1 hour..and then the screen become black, moving the mouse or pressing enter has no effect, the only way to come out is to switch off.

The minimum system requirements to install Ubuntu from Live Desktop CD is 384MB of memory, do you have enough RAM ?

Here's the Ubuntu 7.10 release notes: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/710

You can still install Ubuntu with as little as 256MB of RAM by using the "Alternate CD".

Dear Sir.
Many thanks for your help.
You where right I had not enough RAM on my conputer.
I increased it to 512.
I could go a little further but at the "where are
you?" screen it hang and I don't know where to click
to go further.
According to your name you seems to be a french
speaking person, I'm a frenchmann. So maybe it would
be easier in french.
Best regards and THANKS again. R.Arnold

Yes, I'm a french Canadian. But we should continue this thread in english since it was started thats way. Don't forget that people can filter on language when they search for resolved questions.

At the "Where are you?" screen, you should see a map of the earth with several red dots on it. You should also be able to click near those red dots. When you click on the map, it should zoom-in to let you distinguish between red dots that are too close together. You need to select the red dot corresponding to the nearest city located in your timezone. Alternatively, you can make your selection with the pull down menu under the map itself.

If you can't select a city by ether way, something's wrong and here's 3 ways to solve that problem:

1 - ignore this installation step by clicking the forward button and change your location after the installation is done
2 - ask another question with a new problem description (so people with appropriate knowledge can help you)
3 - fill a bug report

Good luck!

Dear Sebastien.
Many thanks for your answer. This problem is solved.
The problem was that my screen didn't display the
"forward" arrow.
I still have problems installing "UBUNTU" I have a 6Gb
HDD partitioned in two 3 GB partitions C: with Win XP
home, the second was not formated at first, as I was
not able to install "ubuntu" I formated it using
"NTFS"
At the "partioner" using the guided:"use the largest
continuous free space" I got the message"failed to
partition the selected disk"
Using manual I have /dev/hda1 3191 MB
                    /dev/hda5 3199 MB
                     free space 8 MB
"No root system is defined, please correct this from
the partition menu"
step 4/7 edit a partition 2MB, use as? swap. "please
wait resizing partition." "An error occurred while
writing the change" "Operation aborted"
What am I doing wrong? Can you advise me about the
choice I must do at the "edit a partition" step.
Many many THANKS in advance.
Best regards. R.Arnold.

"use the largest continuous free space" means empty space on your HDD that has NOT been partitioned. In your example, you only got 8 MB of free space.

If you still don't have any data on your second Windows partition (/dev/hda5), delete that partition and try again.

Let me know how it goes.
