Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop edition install hangs at 15%

Asked by testpilot

Pentium II 300Mhz, 192MB RAM, Dell laptop (inspiron 7000) that hangs at 15% "Detecting File system" on the install. Win 98 worked fine (was just using it), did an fdisk on the drive for a clean Ubuntu install. Not working... any ideas? Version 7 install CD. This CD has worked on other desktop systems, this is first laptop I have tried. Running from CD seems to work fine. Installation hangs at 15%. System locks (no mouse, etc). Anyone have any ideas?

Please run a memory check from the Ubuntu live install cd boot option.
Then make a complete scandisk from windows 98 (check data and free space)

You have low RAM amount, it is under min required (at least 256 MB of RAM and 4 giga of disk space) to work with Ubuntu i suggest you to install XUbuntu.
http://www.xubuntu.org/get

Hope this Help

Thanks, did not see that on the min requirements. After scouring all my parts, I found a 256MB chip that works, added that to the 128 chip installed and it works great. thanks for the help.

I'm having the same problem, with one major exception: my desktop is not lacking ram in the least. Here's my specs.

Asus P5 mobo (I believe)
Pentium D 3.0 ghz cpu
2 GB DDR2 Ram
GeForce 7600 GT 256 MB graphics card
80, 100, and 500 GB capacity HDDs (trying to install Ubuntu on 500GB, which is clean)

I've tried burning to different types of media, rebooting, and the like, and it just hangs at 15% "Detecting file system". What gives?

@Ender and @ Ori1Pori

Please make some common check using first boot menu Ubuntu live cd options...
This: http://i18.tinypic.com/6tzzndc.jpg
Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check cd for defects"

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Remove the "splash" and "quiet" options to see more boot infos message and/or errors.
Then try some commons parameters by putting them one by one or together:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x)
here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Hope this helps

marcobra (or whoever can answer this)

i enlargened the partition to 40gb and got past the 15% all the way to 90%. but at 90% it also had to detect file systems or something like that and got stuck once again. i couldnt even move my mouse.

do you have any advice for me?
or can anyone else help?

thanks for the help so far hope to find an answer soon.

My problem was two-fold. I did not have enouhg RAM for UBUNTU and I hung at
about 90% due to a corrupt file system on the install CD. Downloaded a new
one, worked fine. Good luck to you. As the Dell laptop I am using could onlu
max out with minimum RAM for UBUNTU, I opted for the XUBUNTU install. Works
great.
